View Full Version : meet Charlie
This is Charlie, i just took him from some people that didn't want him any more, well first he went to my friend Dan and didn't give him any information about the snake, what it ate or any thing (Dan wasn't going to keep it, he was geting it for me) the set up for him was terrible, his cage was discusting, every thing was feces and mold. he was coverd in skin that didn't shed off. now all the skin is off, his cage is clean and actually has hide boxes now and hopefully he will eat soon. i just got a small rat, i'd guess its about 5 inches nose to butt, i'm going to freeze it and try to feed it to him perhaps next week. I wasn't sure if this small rat is too small, Dan said he fed it mice and he ate them fine but he looks too big for mice.
Nice looking snake, glad he'll be given a good home. He's definitely big enough to be eating decent-sized rats.

If your gonna freeze the rat then you should at least do so for 14 days. That way all parasites including mites or fleas etc...will be killed. Unless you raised the rat yourself. I have gotten the same advice myself before, just passing it along. Jamie/Blueeheeler
Blueeheeler-thanks for that, i really did not know. i have been feeding my snakes, 2 of my lizards and my tiger salamander frozen rodents for a long time because i'm scared of them geting parasites, but i did not know it had to be atleast 14 days =( i usually only wait like 5 or 7. i will definetly start leaving them in the freezer longer now.
mykee-by decent do you mean something bigger than a small rat?
heres another picture of him

You should aim for a rat as big around as the thickest part of his body, great rule too go bye, good luck with the little guy, It's always good too hear when a snake finds a good home.

It is almost impossible to tell if that is a male or a female just by looking.
You will have to take it to someone and get it probed to know for sure....
thanks Het, i wasn't sure if you could tell by the length of the tail or not.

Probing IS the best method to sex a snake, but you could take a better guess by comparing the distance from the cloaca to the tip of the tail (distance for females is shorter), the length of the spurs (females will be shorter and stubbier), and the overall fattness of the tail (females will be skinnier). It would probably be impossible to tell the difference without a snake of the opposite sex to compare.
