there hatchling GTPs until they are yearlings so that they can sell them sexed?
It's one thing if you're buying your first Chondro, what sex you get doesn't much matter if you're getting only one at a time and it's your first one.
But what about when you know what sex your Chondro is and you want a mate, or you want to buy a breeding pair right away?
How are buyers and breeders dealing with this issue?
Thanks,
Trevor
I think for the most part a lot of people will buy a couple and hope for a female if they already have a male and want to buy hatchlings.
We are planning on sexing ours soon, and if it's male buying two hatchlings and hopefully get a female. If ours is female we will probably just wait and grab an adult male when we see an ad with a male we like in it.

nowadays its not usual to sex chondros by probing if they are less than a year old. this is done to stop the tail kinking and other possible damage that probing can cause. most if not all TOP breeders in europe, the states and canada will not guarentee the sex of any hatchling chondro. im not sure if any breeders in canada actually have any yearlings, but the odd adult does come up for sale every now and then

That's an excellent question. We have for the past 3 years, kept at least 5 ( a year ) until they were yearlings. Our main objective was exactly what you stated; much easier sexing although we do like to see how they are growing and turning out. Thaks for the question because I would like to know what other breeders do.
Thanks,,

That's a gamble I don't want to take.

Well let's hope that changes. Probing under a year can be just as dangerouse. The damage is often not seen until much later on.
Personally I will never buy a sexed chondro that is not green or under a year of age.

Are you doing the same again this year? If and when I do get a pair and they do produce I will deffinately be holding back as much as half the clutch.

Talk to Don Patterson. He had several yearlings (and some of his adults) available earlier this year. I imagine he will be keeping a bunch back this year as well, but surely not all ;)
Anyway, give him a call and see what he has or what he might have soon. - (250) 655-0706 -

Thanks Jon. Don is deffinately my first call, he usually is when I'm looking for higher end stuff. I have to wait however until mine is old enough to sex. Probably about 8 months from now I think I'll start to consider it.

as a chondro breeder i do not intentionally hold any back until they are big enough to probe,at times i do sell offspring that i have kept back but not because they are big enough to sex.
