There are many herp species to be found in Wainfleet Bog, pretty much everything that is possible in southcentral Ontario. Your odds of finding a massasauga are pretty slim, but it is possible. Are you going with someone who knows the area?

Congrats, Sean!
Wainfleet is pretty far east for any of the remaining few (very few) black rats in the Lake Erie area to be found. Plus, the bog isn't really great black rat habitat. So I would guess there aren't any there.
Now if you really want to see snakes, you should come with us to Pelee Island:-)

When I went to wainfleet I went with the guy from the MNR that is researching the massassauga rattlesnakes and we had a hard time finding one even with the radio tracking equipment. About 4 of us stepped over the massassauga I stepped back over it and was standing within less than a foot away from it and not once did it even rattle. Also I don't no when your going but they won't even be out from their dens yet, they have some nice coloured garter snakes there, and on the way driving in listen for fowlers toads calling.

I've spent many hours roaming the Bog. I also participated in a convervational search/survey for Massasauga's sponsered by Niagara College. We'd go out every weekend and find nothing, it was a good time, though in retrospect I think it was more destructive than helpful. I understand that later tha summer they did find one Massasauga and implanted a radio transmitter for tracking. At the time the water table was low as well (the year after the last fire).
I have found more Smooth Green snakes out there than I have anywhere else. Actually, that is the only place that I have found them recently :)
Have a good time and tread lightly!
