View Full Version : Calcium carbonate
Where do you get your calcium carbonate (without D3)? There has to be a cheaper source than the pet store, right? Health food store?
Why would you want calcium without d3? You can get calcium glubionate in a liquid form from a vet. Also called Neo-Calglucon.
I've heard stories of D3 overdose so I thought if I gave my beardie alternate doses of calcium with and without D3, it would be safer. He has a ZooMed bulb that he spends the majority of his time within 4 inches of. Am I being paranoid?
I know Rep-Cal sells one for reptiles kept outside.

Get the bone from a cuttle-fish. Cheap (like a buck) and all you have to do is get some shavings from it and voila! Instant CaCO3!!
Are you paranoid? Not necessarily. If you feel better alternating, do so. I, personally, haven't had a d3 overdose, but that doesn't mean it can't happen. Jeff is right about the cuttle bone. They are usually sold for birds. Scrape some small peices of it onto your dragon's salad.
 Thanks guys!
Any suggestions on how to crush it to dust crix with? He's not eating so much greens yet.

best way lets see.... shave in to morter and pestle, but not everybody has those laying around.
maybe but it in a container and work it down with a dremel tool?
hammer's are fun they're suggested in anger management courses for stress relief lol?
hope this helps if not be creative.
LOL! Hmmm, now that I think of it, a rolling pin would probably work!
You can also flake off thin pieces with a knife and just put those on the salad. Just think of it as Beardie Bacon Bits.

Just use a metal file. Simple, easy, and they are about 6 bucks at Home Hardware.
Home Hardware? Is that the Canadian version of Home Depot?
No, Home Hardware is a much smaller store but we have a lot of them... like one in every town. I like them.
A file is a good idea too and I already have one of those. :)
