View Full Version : Urgent!! Drown herself?

My BRB is soaking in her bowl quite often and I noticed that in the last couple of minutes that her head right now is down at the bottom, below the surface! Will she know to come up? She seems to displace alot of water so it is up to the rim. I just wanna make sure if it is normal for them to soak with their heads below?
They can go underwater and for longer periods than we would be able to. As long as she CAN get her head up, she's not going to drown herself. Does her water have an open top? If so, she'll be fine. If it is a lid with a hole in it, it is possible for her to fill up the bowl and not be able to find the hole and drown that way.

There is a large hole, but the lid does have a lip on it. Anyone know how long a BRB can stay below water?

If you're so worried, take off the lid. She won't drown herself if her head is free to come out of the water.
She could probably hold her breath for a couple minutes...
my brb does that too...I remember when I first brought him home he spent a long time drinking....

Do not worry about it, your snake in sot going to drown herself, mine BRB spent a lot of time in their water bowls, with theri heads under water, they are really shy!!!!!!

Snakes, even desert snakes, are capable of holding their breath for <i>at least</i> 45 minutes, often longer.

Yup, it's true. I've seen my snakes submerge their heads for half an hour. But the bigger issue is, why is your BRB soaking so much? Is it in shed? If not, I'd be checking the water for little black speckles if I were you. That would be mites, and constant soaking is the first clue you'll get as to their presence. If it's not mites, maybe your humidity isn't high enough.

Unfortunately, they had a slight problem shipping (took an extra day in transit) and were w/o any humidity for over 36 hours in cool 45+ weather. <<Damn Airborne Express>> Anywho, they have 95+% humidity in their cages right now and are only soaking approx once a week.
On a side note, my female ate for the first time with me tonight and she also soaked right after eating, which according to another thread is quite common.
These two are mite free and actually quite amazing, glad I snagged them!
