When you register your business they'll tell if the name you want is taken if it is you pick another one.
Pretty simple I guess.

Go to the secretary of state, in your own state. Go to the database search then put in the name of the buisness you want to see if the names taken. http://www.state.nj.us/Business.shtml

First thing you would have to do is see if the name is taken already if not then procied to get a EIN # (Employer Idenification Number Fedreral) then you would have to register in your state for business name and unemployment (and other fun stuff), not sure on the specifics of how NJ does it. www.irs.gov

ok heres the link where you "look" for the business name.
Nevermind it was having techical difficulties but you can get there from the link below.

And here's where you reserve it.

If you have any other questions i will try to help or i can ask my boss.

Why say anything to the government? Heck, it is your business, not theirs. You do not "have to" reserve anything likes names or whatnot. Just silly. Pick a name, and it is yours. There are several businesses that carry the same names. Not like your competing with names like Macy's, Dillard's, Safeway or Wal-Mart, your running a home business that is only yours to control.

Do you think anyone knows about my businesses? NO...they belong to me. Me only. My hard work, my money, my business. When you register a name, all they want is to tax you. Forget it. Do your own thing and leave the wolves out of the yard......

I grew up in Jersey on the shore, so I'd go with that one.

True you don't HAVE to register your business name, but if you want to be known as an Incorporation (small or large) you have to. I'm not sure what all of them are cause i just fill out the different forms and do bookkeeping, but there are some benifits when you register your business and get and EIN # and all the other taxes.

If you don't claim the money you made off selling as other income, and you get audited it can come back and bite you in the @ss.

The easiest thing in your case would be to talk to a C.P.A. or an E.A. (an accountant) They will be able to tell you the best route to take.
