Do any of the Hot keepers have any bite pictures, prefer viper bites, anything that will discourage people from buying them.
I know some people interested in purchasing some Hots, that have no previous experience, handling, even non venomous,I asked them if they had a death wish,,as i have owned venomous for years,I would not recomend a Hot to just anyone,as mistakes can be fatal...
Thanks Mike

Take a look on www.tongs.com There are quite a few bite pics on there...... They are what to expect from most viper envenomations.....

Thanks Gregg thats what i was looking for. Some people just dont get the reality of a bite untill they see it..Some of those are pretty disturbing...
I hope this makes people think before they buy.
God lord.....those bite photos just solidified my choice to never own venemous snakes. Personally I cannot imagine being able to keep my nerves under control knowing I could be facing an injury like that. Wow.

And thats why I would never own a hot ;)
There is a bite on there where the guys hands are all black bubbles, what snake would have caused that?

That is the venom turning your skin and flesh into a goo,as for species it could be many,Rattler or viper

That bite is the result of a hemotoxic or cytotoxic bite....... Most likely a rattlesnake of some sort.......

If you're talking about this bite, it was from a WDB. (C. atrox)

Mary doesn't have her email address up so I dunno' for sure. I bet who ever was bitten still has their hand though.

Yeah, it is not too often at all that someone would loose an entire hand due to a rattlesnake bite but fingers are fair game......

Yikes! That pic reminds me of a pic that I saw from the effects of a Brown Recluse bite. Necrosis of the flesh... ick. :medopen:

Shocking pictures!!!!!!!
I am now terrified of HOTS .

Hmm, looks like fun.. heh..
Tortoise, I wouldn't be terrified. Proper precautions can prevent this. As well that snake bites are out of self protection, proper tools and training and common sense and you'll be in the clear most of the time. That and knowing your animals.
I do have pics of people in car wrecks, it'll keep ya' from wanting to run to the grocery store..
Amazing, noone thinks twice about something that is one of the common death related causes..
Greg, do you have any Bitis bite pics?
i have some great bite pics, but unfortunately, they were given to me with confidence that i wouldnt post them on the net, so sorry.
tongs.com is the best area to check pics or go to the library and check out some books on it, there are qute a few decent ones
good luck!

Xain,
In a way I wish I did, and in a way I am glad I dont......LOL...... Looking at bite pics from less necrotic snakes is good enough...... Actually there have not been nearly as many bites from bitis in the US as there have been from other species......

Ok i am seriously in a warped mood so take this one with a grain of salt.
Imagine taking a bite from a species that caused you to bleed from old scars your eyes, nose, ears, mouth, other private places. causes back pain and vomitting and a host of other not so fun effects. Ya i know gross to think about so what snake am i talking about. I will give you a hint. It lives not in the Americas and is responsible for roughly 800 to 1000 deaths per year.

LOL.....I had some help. I was talking with a friend the other night about venomous snakes. He mentioned how this snake makes you bleed from all your orphasis (sp). I did a google search on the Russel's Viper. What a beautiful snake!

Just an observation and a question...
on that last site (www.venomousreptiles.org...) there are quite a few Copperhead bite photos, but none of them seem particularly severe, like, only seem to have swelling, no observable necrosis...
Anyway, I was just wondering (since I have no clue about venomous snakes) are the venoms of the Agkistrodon sp. not particularly potent/dangerous? What kind of effects do they have? (like cytotoxic? etc...)

those freehandling pictures made me so nervous! im still all TENSE, oh god! you're CRAZY (LOL, jk) but you obviously have some skill and lots of luck to be alive!
Agkistrodon bite can vary in severity but the majority of species have potentially lethal effects
Copperheads are typically regarded as non-lethal
cantils, cottonmouths, mamushi, hump-nosed vipers, sharpnosed vipers, malayan pitvipers are potentially lethal to varying degrees
most cause necrotic and hemotoxic effects
hump-nosed and malayan pits have venom which can cause renal failure
cantils cause severe necrosis (I've heard amputation is necessary in upwards of 10% of envenomations)
sharp-nosed cause a whole wide range of nasty effects
it would be unwise to relate the mild nature of a copperhead envenomation with any other member of the agkistrodon genus

I am from Canada not many hots here... What causes the skin to split like that in the pice???????/<<<<< anyone know?
Gregg M
04-03-04, 11:21 PM
That split is actually done by doctors to relieve the pressure from the bad swelling.....

The person who's hand is in that photo got to keep his hand. I believe he lost most of the function in it though. A detailed account of his bite can be found here:
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/articles/72
That is his story...his wives side of the tale is here:
http://www.venomousreptiles.org/articles/95
Very eye-opening account about the consequences of being tagged by a hot. In this case a C. atrox.
