I got this in my email.

Having some control over gas prices...

I hear we are going to hit close to $1.00 a litre by the summer.

Want gasoline prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action. Phillip Hollsworth, (who ever he is), offered this good idea: This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy gas on a certain day" campaign that was going around last year in April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to "hurt" ourselves by refusing to buy gas.

It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them. BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work.

Please read it and join with us!

By now you're probably thinking gasoline priced at about 69.9 cents a litre is super cheap. Me too! It is currently 79.3 for regular unleaded in my town. Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a Litre of gas is CHEAP at 69.9, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace....not sellers. With the price of gasoline going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of gas come down is if we hit someone in the pocketbook by not purchasing THEIR gas!

And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves. How? Since we all rely on our cars, we can't just stop buying gas. But we CAN have an impact on gas prices If we all act together to force a price war.

Here's the idea: For the rest of this year, DON"T purchase ANY gasoline from the two biggest companies (which in Canada are now are PETRO CANADA & SHELL). If they are not selling any gas, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact we need to reach literally millions of Shell and Petro Canada gas buyers.

It's really simple to do!! Now, don't wimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people! I am sending this note to all of you. If each of you sends it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000). and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers!

If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further you guessed it..... THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!!

Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all. How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within one day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!!

I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you?

Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on.

PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES AND KEEP THEM DOWN.

THIS CAN REALLY WORK.

YOU KNOW THEY LOVE HOLIDAYS AND SUMMER TRAVELERS.

Note:
This can work if people actually think about where they are buying their gas, and stop the "I buy my gas at xxxxxx because it's better for my car" or "this is where I always buy my gas" idiotic logic. Gas is gas and it doesn't matter who you buy it from as the gas all comes from the same refineries, so change your habit pattern. I am amazed at the number of people who are buying gas at a station which is five cents higher than the station across the street. Do they really think they are getting better gas? If even 15 or 20 percent of the buyers stopped buying at Petro Canada and Shell, it would have a noticeable effect. Stop complaining and do something about the high prices.

thats a pretty good idea but i already dont buy from petro or shell i use zehrs coz they give me auto cash $0.03 per liter or something like that , you use it to buy groceries

next when you put the price of gas next to other items such as bottle water or coke are the prices really that outrageous
i would love to see the prices back in the $0.50 range but hey that will never happen

3 years ago when i was in australia we paid $0.999 @ one station and with the exchange at that time that was like $0.75 cdn

well i will pass this on to everyone i know and i will tell them the same maybe we can make a difference but somehow i doubt it , i think opec will just cut production since the supply and demand will be changed

Good theory but where do you think that all the other gas stations fill up their trucks? Petro Canada & Shell...Or what refineries to they buy the gas from...Petro Canada & Shell.

If you really want to hit them where it hurts...don't buy any Doritos from them or any other convenience store crap...that's where they really soak you.

The gaz price in Montreal is around 88.9/L. Quite expensive...

When you think about it, the gaz we use at the moment was bought a few months back, 3 or 4 months, so their excuse taht the price they buy it is always going up doesn't hold since they didn't pay that high price 3 or 4 months ago...

Anyhow, the only way this could be fixed was if the goverment took action which he will prob never do since they make so much money out of the taxes on it...

I don't even know of Petro Canada or Shell station around here...lol :p I usually get mine at Sunoco... I get points on my CAA card for it which help me out on the cost of renewal :)

Good idea in theory, but it would never work. If even 15% of the people involved decide that this is hooey, it's bust. It's an all-or-nothing deal.

Its all supply and demand. Its a good idea but business does not work without gasoline. We cannot just simple stop using it. Like Mykee said, its all or nothing. Maybe there will be less taxes implemented one day...but we are far off.

Actually, there are some differences in gas.

Testing has shown that gas that comes from Esso's refineries (note: not always Esso's pumps, as they sometimes will get gas from other refineries, and vice versa) is the dirtiest, most polluting, gas of the major companies in Canada. I believe Sunoco's was considered the best environmentally because of the 10% ethanol content. Shell and PetroCanada were pretty good because they had invested in new equipment to improve the quality. It was assumed that Esso would eventually do the same but hadn't gotten around to it yet.

I therefore avoid Esso. I use Shell and get AirMiles, or PC and get PetroPoints. Sometimes I use Sunoco and get the CAA points. Mostly, I use the stations that I have to pass on the highway to get anywhere.

And personally, I think gas is too cheap. I'd like to see it hit $1.00/ litre. Maybe then people would drive vehicles with more reasonably sized engines. Who really needs to drive a V8 pick up truck to the office every day? When 4 cylinder engines become the most popular in vehicles, then gas prices will be high enough, in my opinion.

Sunoco sells the most environmentally friendly gasoline.

They offer about a 10 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared with other fuel.

But i agree with Jeff... until soccer moms stop driving their Sequoias and Durangos around the city gas isn't expensive enough. (Unfortunately the people who can afford the huge expensive SUVs can also afford $1/litre for the gas they chug)

I don't think that picking the gas that pollutes the least is IDIOTIC LOGIC, thank you very much.

Yes but buying gas at a particular station does not garrantee that it was refined at any particular refinery. As Jeff said, you The price war is meant to be at the pumps If everyone stopped buying from the two biggest in favour of the smaller guys the GAS STATIONS THEMSELVES would have to react to stay in business. Personally I try to buy gas from the independent gas stations, their service tends to be better. There are only 5 refineries in Ontario, 3 of them in Sarnia, 1 in Nanticoke, 1 in Oakville...

here is a chart on the dirtiness of gasoline by refinery. http://www.foecanada.org/cleanair/fuel_2000-05-18.htm

You can see that petro canada's fuel is dirtier in spring then one of esso's refineries (imperial).

So choosing by the name of the pump won't help you, as the gas could be from any of the 5 refineries.

Edit:
If you were really concerned about the enviroment you would ride a bike or take the bus.

Mohawk also adds Eth to there gasoline and yes you will ALWAYS get gas with it in it It reduces emissions But Kills your engine faster if you want eth in your gas you can buy it CHEAP and add it to your tank later

Unfortunately MOST of your gas price is TAX its not the oil companys faults so much as it is the governments they want there 70% cut of it all If you want Gas prices to come down organize a rally and march to capitol hill

I have a dream.... Where every car and truck on the road Is loaded with a fuel injected forced induction big block.......

Car companies are the ones who have to fix this problem. They need to make vehicles compatible with other fuel sources. Gas companies and goverment are just cashing in before all these new engines are availible to the public.

well here gas is usually around $1.32 USD but it has risen lately to almost $1.60 USD and this area has the cheapest gas of most of the east coast. i dont know what that is in canadian dollars tho.

That's not bad for gas. It works out to about 53.5 per litre. Quite a bit less than what we pay.

As long as we're beholden to OPEC we're all screwed over the price of gas.

I can't wait to own a hydrogen powered car. Emissions won't be an issue, but if anyone is expecting it to be cheaper they should prepare to be disappointed. There's been a few tech articles on hydrogen feasibility published and the indication is that companies will keep the prices on par with gas to cover research and development costs. Of course once they make those R&D costs back will they lower prices? Not a chance.

the problem boycotting certain companies is you are helping more oil companies grow, which can be good. but not in the case of Esso.
Shell and Petro Can. are investing millions into "green energy"
(windmills, solar paneling etc...) Esso on the other hand is not investing a penny, they also helped fund Pres. Bush's campaign.
if anyone gets a chance check out www.stopesso.com
(im pretty sure thats the address)
cool info on it. i started getting interested cos my dads an oil worker.

Gas stations do not control their prices. head offices control the prices. The only way the price changes is if Head office gives the call. Great theory, but it will never work.

Greg West

Most of the cost in gas is taxes. The gas companies are not the ones at fault. Funny thing is we supply most of it to the states and we are paying more than they are. Where is the logic in that?

Good idea, but, when I've bought gas, it's either at Safeway or Domo.

I buy the premium with the highest octane level put it in my 3/4 Ton 4X4 & drive really fast everywhere I go. Seeings how I worked the Patch for 12+ years I figure I'd better support it LOL Mark
P.S. whether people want to accept it or not the Oilpatch has ruled the world for quite some time & will continue to do so until its all gone. It's all about money & power folks. Sad but True.
