I believe you can scan them in directly and lighten if needed, or take them at the clinic on the lighted board.
Barring those two, I suppose holding them in front of a large enough bright light would work as well, you may have to do some expirementation and possibly utilize the manual settings on the camera to have the lighting come out right.

The x-ray needs to be back-lit
A light box would work best. Or you could probably use a bright light, with a white bed sheet. Hang the sheet, place the light behind the sheet and place the x-ray on the front side of the sheet

You could try back lighting the x-ray and then take a picture with the flash off or get a projector place the x-ray on it & aim it at a white sheet or wall and then photograph it on the wall/sheet.
Play with it and see what works
