He ran the snakes out of Ireland and in doing so started a global phenomenon known as reptilian discrimination.
So as I snake lover I say it's your job not to wear green today! And anyone looking for a kiss should get a kick!
DOWN WITH ST. PAT!
Cheers,
Trevor
PS
I still support dangerous consumption levels of green beer, that's ok.
right on! i'm not wearing any green, all red and black. and at school today i'll kick every one wearing green and yell "why must you hate snakes?!"

Here's a classic tune for all to enjoy.
"I'se the Bye"
I'se the bye that builds the boat and I'se the bye that sails her
I'se the bye that catches the fish and brings 'em home to Lizer
CHORUS:
Hip your partner Sally Tibbo, hip your partner Sally Brown
Fogo, Twillingate, Morton's Harbour, all around the circle
Sods and rinds to cover yer flake, cake and tea for supper
Codfish in the spring o' the year fried in maggoty butter
I took Lizer to a dance and faith but she could travel
And every stop that she did take was up to her knees in gravel
Susan White she's out o' sight, her petticoat wants a border
Old Sam Oliver in the dark, he kissed her in the corner
I'se the bye that builds the boat and I'se the bye that sails her
I'se the bye that catches the fish and takes 'em home to Lizer

Newphs and Irish are not the same. And I'm not even talking about the Irish as a whole. My beef is with St. Pat only. He started the snake hate movement and I refuse to support him.
However, as stated previously I am in favour of green beer.
Cheers,
Trevor

Trev, I know your just diggin at St. Patrick.
The majority of Newfies are Irish or come from the British Isles. We are not the same as Irish, we are Irish. Well Most of our grandparents are anyways. Most of our families are only a couple generations displaced from Ireland. The traditions and feelings are very strong in Newfoundland. Remember until 1949, Newfoundland was still a British colony mainly comprised of Irish.

This thread in no way is intended to offend anyone Irish. It's all in fun. I'm just trying to point out that St. Pat is not only famouse for bring religion to Ireland but for chasing out the snakes.
It's all meant in fun, so please let's keep it that way.
Cheers,
Trevor
PS Green Beer!

Haven't heard that song in a while!
Of course, according to most sources there weren't any actual snakes in Ireland for St. Patrick to chase out. It's a *legend*, and at best, an analogy.

Beannachtam na Feile Padraig ---Saint Patty rocks
the truth about him is:
Historical sources report that Saint Patrick was not even Irish! He was born around 373 A.D. in either Scotland or in Roman Britain (the Romans left Britain in 410 A.D.). His real name is believed to have been Maewyn Succat, but he changed it to Patrick after he became a priest. At the age of 16, while living in Ireland, he was kidnapped by pirates and sold into slavery.
During his 6-year captivity, he worked as a shepherd. He found strength in his faith. He finally escaped and made it to France, where he became a priest (and later a bishop).
When he was about 60 years old, St. Patrick traveled back to Ireland to spread the Christian word. He used the green shamrock, which resembles a three-leafed clover, as a metaphor to explain the concept of the Trinity - father, son, and holy spirit. The Irish people embraced him. The old saint died in his beloved Ireland, March 17th, about 460 A.D. The land which once enslaved him, he had set free.
Today, Saint Patrick's Day is a basically a time to wear green and party. The first American celebration of Saint Patrick's Day was in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1737. As the saying goes, on this day "everybody is Irish!" Over 100 U.S. cities now hold Saint Patrick's Day parades, the largest held in New York City.
the whole snake thing is just folk lore.....so go out and have fun....

Yes, precisely.....'snakes' being a metaphor for 'pagans/heathens'.

It always strikes me as odd how people over here hang on to thier "heritage". When I here people say they're 1/4 irish, 1/4 scot and 1/2 russian I always want to say" no your not your 100% Canadian." And being Canadian aint so bad is it. Its ts kinda hard for a country to have a strong national identity when noones Canadian. And I'm not tryin to pick on anyone just something to think about.
For the record I'm Irish by birth (born in Kingscourt, Cavan) and Canadian by choice.

Have you read the multicultural act of 1971? It encourages people to be 1/4 this and 3/4 that. Canada is and always will be a melting pot.

Coming from Newfoundland. Our identity is one of the few things that give us our pride. It's one of the few things we have. Thats why you'll always hear a Newfie in the croud.
Brian
Well lucky for me I'm not big in to the meaning of things like that, for the most part...lol :p
The only holiday I actually celebrate the meaning of is Halloweenie. All the rest are as follows...
St. Patrick's Day = Green beer day
Easter = Happy Bunny Day (mmmmm candy :flick: )
Christmas = Happy Halloween (with presents and food)
Thanksgiving = Happy Turkey Day (mmmm food :flick: )
LOL and according to my dad EVERYBODY is Irish on St. Patrick's Day :D Every year (even though none of us have an ounce of Irish in us) we have a bunch of green beer, boiled cabbage and corned beef, boiled potatoes too.

Yes that is very true, that is what I was trying to say, you did a much better job. We promote diversity, not assimilation.
Peace keeping not policing!
