haha. everthing always ends up liek thsi aroudn here. everyoen always finding pot whiel herping aswell

so at CT they carry HPS for real? and wouldnt those tomatoe lights be more expensive from a speciality store.

and again anyone ever use them for herp related things?

They are mega expensive man, you have to have a special ballast to run them, you cant just screw them into a normal light socket.

Plus they are mega bright man, it would look like you had the sun in just your house at night...LOL

IMO they would be no good for herps, but who knows maybe someone has tried it...

not so bad. 120 bucks for a decent wattage with ballast. works about to the same u get bang for yoru buck. and would be cheaper after u buy the ballast. only as to be alike 50 to 100 watts.

IMO..if I were to spend the money on a HPS....I would only use it for growing killer um "tomatoes" ...lol

I don't think its pratical to use for heating enclosures. As far as I know...the minimum wattage for a HPS is 250 watts. Way to high for herp use!!

lmao i agree-you should use it for growing some "tomatos",dont know if it would be good to keep a reptile around them though-it might get lazy after nibbling.
Would a super bright light like that burn out the retinas of an animal housed under one over time?
just seems like overkill to me.

hmm. perhaps, i just remember people sayign they used them.

who knows depends of speciesprobabaly

And, of course, it depends on the size of the enclosure, and how far away the animals would be. Light intensity follows the inverse square law- if the intensity at 1m is 100, at 2m it will be 25, 3m- 11.1, 4m- 6.25, etc. I doubt many people have enclosures large enough to be suitable for HPS lights.

Cheapest place to get them, though, would be police auctions. Apparently some people do use them for things other than tomatoes:-) and get caught. Last auction I was at, they practically gave away a whole skid of HPS ballasts, fixtures, reflectors & bulbs. I've always wondered if they note the name and address of the person who buys them for future reference:-)

If you're going to buy them at a store, use *cash*. And this isn't necessarily just because you could grow weed with them.

Say that your name and CC# end up on a list that the store has to give the police. They check your electricity and see a big spike, so they drop in unexpectedly and don't find weed but a basement full of reptiles that violate city by-laws.
Well, they've already spent the money on a raid, may as well come away with something.

Sounds paranoid, I know, but for every decent cop out there is at least another one who's a jerk.

ahh inverse square. thats been awhile since physics class. i love that stuff.

police austions thats genious. but u never know how long they were used for.

Seems like a good idea too me, heres why.

Stupid criminal thinks he is getting a good deal on growing equipment from a police auction. If he buys it from this site he has to provide shipping address, credit card, tings like that. Hell if you want process of elimination on who is growing ther ya go. Just go check in on said buyer a few months down the line and see what he has been useing the equipment for. Seems like a good idea to me.

You can get hps in small wattage
I've installed complete kits at work that were 70 watts. Are you sure you weren't thinking Mercury Vapor lights? I've heard of people using them for herps.
I think high pressure sodium, metal halide and mercury vapors are all considered high intensity discharge(hid) lights could be wrong though.

yea it was mercury vapor bulbs. hhaa.

Off topic, but as a pot grower, wouldn't they just be paying in cash?

Well unless www.stealitback.com has a new technology that you can feed your cash into your floppy drive and it comes out on the other side, I think you're going to have to use credit cards :P

Most auction sites, just to sign up make your provide a credit card so you can be held accountable for items you bid on. But I guess if you were actually at a police auction using cash would keep things relatively anonymous

I know Toronto police put up police auctions on Ebay from time to time. No idea about the RCMP.
