well.. doing the regular feeding routine this morning.. take the top off the cage on one corner.. throw a pinkie in.. make sure she eats.. put top back on.. well.. didnt go like that this morning.....
i didnt even have my hand in the enclosure this morning and my bf said something to me turned my head and here came the sav when i wasnt looking.. she got the pinkie and almost took my finger with it. i had to have two stitches and a tetnus (sp?) shot. so now i cant use my index finger for anything.. it hurts, but its my fault. should have been paying attention.

"a tetnus (sp?) shot"
Does anyone know why this is necessary for a monitor bite?

Not sure why ( i imagine its for health and saftey purposes) but where i do my college course (where they keep a number of reptiels including monitors) we are not allowed to partake in any practicals like handling, cleaning, etc unless we provide proof of a tetnus jab.
wow if a juvenile can do that i would not want to know what an adult could do lol
kind reguards cheers Will

she's about two feet.. give or take an inch
when i went to the hospital for the stitches the doc made my bf come back and measure her. they had to know how big she was for some reason? i dunno.
my finger's better now though. i get my stitches out monday.
dont be scared lol.. im still not afraid of my girl because it was a dumb mistake on my part.

just be glad it wasn't a larger species or one with sharp teeth. A couple of stitches is being let off lightly! Most people aren't aware of what the larger species of monitor can do.

Thanks for the warning...I was planning on always wearing gloves anyways when she/he got bigger no matter how tame. I dont want an injury like that!
Ive heard they have lock jaw, how would you get them off...ive heard dumping theirs heads under water...would that work or is it bad for them?
thanks!
Ive dunked nile monitors to have them bite harder and hold on tighter...... I don't know if it was just mine but it didn't want to let go, no matter how much oxygen it lost, so naturally I pulled the nile out (by that time the water was red with my blood) I just waited it out, and remained calm.... I've heard of others using lemon juice, or vinigar.... Never tried it, i try not to get bit.. hehe
alcohol stops snakes from constricting, maybe it would get a monitor off of some one.

rubbing or like beer?

beer for you, rubbing alcohol for the monitor.
I think a squirt of vinegar in the mouth does the trick, but with most animals just letting their feet rest on the floor, so they think they can get away, will cause them to let go and run.
rubbing, but i think beer would work too, but id recomend rubbing, we dont need drunk snakes =)
bartman i like your website, was it free to make?
Tetnis shots are to prevent infection and dieseases carried by animals , also if you were to step on a nail or get cut on abarbed wire fence you should get one. My friend had to get a needle in his a$$ when he was bitten by a coyote lol.

hmmm did anyone else catch on to the two foot monitor still eating pinkies?I figured a two footer eating much larger food items than that, I have a sav that is around 18 inches and is eating fuzzy rats.
yeah i was thinking the same thing. i have a sav 6 inches snout to vent that easily scarfs down hoppers
and i strongly recomend geting tongs or something to hold the food with rather than fingers

she eats fuzzies too
when the pet shop here is out of them we buy pinkies and feed her 3-4 at a time, and they're larger than what your probably thinking of a pinkie.

how large?
id even say a 2 foot could take a small adult, no?
Lrplts, yea it was free to make..go to geocities.com. Its good for a free site but it easily crashes with to much bandwidth. Im think im just gonna pay like 10 bucks a month and get my own domain name and all that stuff...theirs 3 diff packages...
thanks adam, and i agree with him, i think you should try a small adult mouse, i highly doubt he'll regurgitate it.
