A visit to the local PJ's pets left me crying today.
Cage #1 featured water dragons. One of the bunch made me feel ill. Its eyes were swollen shut and oozing a white-yellow puss. On its back were a few old sheds along with obvious open sores, scabs and blisters. I asked the clerk what was the story with it and she relpied that the poor guy was not going to make it (obviously) and no vet care was being provided.
Cage #2 and #3 Two 10 inch savanah monitors. Look like they havent eaten in weeks. A sickly skeletal frame of a lizard collapsed on the floor of his 5.5 gallon.
Cage #4 Three bag-of-bones of an excuse for an iguana. But what else is new?

A trip to the local Superpet and we find....
Cage #1 Mangrove monitor. Its been at the store for almost 2 years now and is nothing more than a pile of skin. It is actually 1/3 of the size it was last year. They refuse to feed it properly claiming that they dont have the resources to feed and keep a large lizard. Then why did they pick it up in the first place?
Cage #2 Two horrid looking horned lizards. The store picked them up KNOWING that they NEED to eat ants, but refure to provide them and instead only feed them waxworms.
Cage #3 Three ball pythons. Obviously not being fed as they are about 1/4 the size of normal hatchlings. One has its head and eyes sunken in.

For those of you who dont know PJS and Superpet are the same company.
I URGE you and PLEAD you to NEVER support this hideous excuse for animal treatment.
I have called the SPCA countless times and am now banned from all the stores. You can help. Please voice your complaints.

which pj's did you go to because i've been to one in square one and york dale mall not only are the reptiles sick they are way way way way over priced. so if they don't want the reptiles their for ever they should lower the price. it honestly makes me sick to see the reptiles their just die.

Well I have to say that I don't approve of somethings the pet stores do but I am involved with the PJs mentioned (I don't work there but I am in there a lot and know everybody) and the savannahs are sickly...but they ARRIVED like that. Fact is PJs bought them from out of province from a breeder (who i don't know)and they have never eaten since they have arrived and it looks like they were not in good shape prior to shipment. Pjs does actually care about there animals, some staff are not fit to be working for a pet store because they just don't care. We have witnessed a batch of supposed CB ball pythons come in that had skin dry as a bone and from there it just gets worse...we help out voluntarily with anything we can but we can't be there all the time with school and work. They have a store provided vet but she is not interested or not educated in reptiles it seems. You can always point the blame at petstores but sometimes they get screwed from small breeders who offer a good deal and just dump all the animals that are not eating or wc on them. And sometimes they are to blame for neglect or not being educated on there animals but I can honestly say they put the effort to maintain a healthy stock. I don't think the savannahs should be for sale and don't approve of that or the bad water dragon, I think that should be taken care of first. I don't know about superpet since I am not there often. Thats just my take on this subject

The fact is that it is illegal, and not to mention immoral to refuse vetrianary care to a living creature that needs it. That water dragon truly needed it 3 weeks ago. Its far too gone to save it now.
If PJs would buy healthy stock from local breeders and promote education on healthy stock there wouldn't be such a problem. But they insist on buying from wholesalers such as port credit pets and some place in mississauga. All or most of these arrive sick, they then turn around and sell the sick reptiles for a 300% mark up. Its all about money.

Well yes it is about money these are bussnisses
but thats no excuse for a wholeseller selling a dying animal to a petstore or a petstore selling a dying animal to customer.
the cycle has to stop
can't Pj's go back on the vender but then i relize if you piss off the wholeseller then you don't get the other good deals.
it's just a vicious circle
