I have a 5 year old female that has had her POS and has shown signs of fertilization. My concern is this: On Wednesday she got below her substrate which I use an old bed sheet, any way she dislodged the sensor for the rheostat and the temps got way too high. like 130+. No burns are visable no blisters ect...Can that much heat compromise the litter? I am concerned as I have not see her getting any bigger. She is still eating and she is very active. Right now temps are 86-90 on the warm side and 74-78 cool side. With humidity at 65%.
Any information I can get and advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance. Jamie

How long were they at 130 and was it just the hot spot or the whole cage? If she has enough room to thermorgulate then she should be fine as long as she could get far enough away from it.
Are you sure she ovulated? Depending on when she did she could be due any day, a lot of breeders boas have started to give birth.
As for your current temps, I keep my cool side at 80-82 like Jeff Rone does.
How is using a bed sheet working for you? Do you have two that you roate or something? It can't give very much protection between her and the hot spot. Maybe putting a few layers of newpaper under there might help too.
Good luck,
Trevor

I can't tell you anything about the effects of different temps on unborn offspring but I can say that 130 isn't really that high of a temperature. When you think about it we don't deal with dangerous temps, even 130 is basically just a really hot day, shouldn't be enough to leave burns. I've heard of people keeping an even higher hot spot than that intentionally... I think it had something to do with curing a respiratory illness. Hope your babies turn out for you.

BoidKeeper- Thank you for your reply. Well I know she was not on the hot spot for more than two hours. Her cage over all was 83. she lives in a cage that is 5x2x2 so she has enough room to thermoregulate, but thats the thing she did not try to move away from the heat at all. She was on top of the plexiglass that I have covering the UTH and under her sheet. As far as my substrate using sheets works very well. They are queen size flat sheets folded many times to give it more absorption and keep her away from the direct heat, but she has started to dig under it so I put in a hide for her and that seems to help. Yes I have lots of flat sheets we don't like to use them on our beds so I have quite a few and they are easy to rotate and clean.
Oh If she just ovulated on feb 6th and just had her Post ovulation Shed on the 28th of feb, wouldn't she be due 105 day from the time of her POS? So that would make her due in Late may early June. If I am wrong please let me know, I got this information from another site her in the States.

I think those numbers sound good. If she was able to move an chose not to, I wouldn't worry about it.
Cheers,

Things are looking good. She is getting a little bigger. I can't believe that she did not abort. I can't wait until June.

Yeah it is generally 100-105 days from the POS, untill she gives birth...
Good luck and keep us posted.. :)
raise your cage up a 1/4 inch and put the heat pad under the cage and you will not get this kind of trouble again. I never put heat pads in the cage for fear of eletric shock. I have snakes that sit all day at 110 + degrees like its nothing, and gravid boas will go where the temps are right for them.
My friend had two gravid boas, one cage on top of the other, and they would move from one side of the cage to the other and back almost at the same time every coulple of hours, kinda cool to see.

Piers - I have a wood cage that has recessed uth's placed under plexiglass, with a rheostat for controlled heat in a 5x2x2 cage that is Five foot tall and house 4 snakes seperatly . She had disloged the sensor for the rheostat by burrowing and that caused the spike in heat.
But thanks for the advice anyway. Jamie
