Looking under boards for snakes this morning, I found this hefty garter snake. It really brought back some vivid memories when she displayed like this. I can remember when we used to handle them often and they'd do this for a while. Actually pretty impressive and a pretty snake as well.
I took a pic, thanked her, and sent her on her way.

Cool picture. I'd have to say that I usually take garters for granted, but since its going on 6 months since I have seen a snake, I am totally excited about going out to my friends farm and catching them once it warms up.
Wow!! Haven't seen a garter do that to me before! See, I told you you should do your hair before you leave house Mark! :D

Of all of the garter snakes (2 species) I caught in Manitoba when I was growing up, I can count on one hand the number that made any attempt to bite, yet the few I have caught on trips to Florida did exactly what the one in the photo is doing. Perhaps it's that particular subspecies (or the heat)

Maybe in Florida they have more natural predators, and they so they are more defensive.

I honestly believe you're on to something with that observation, shaggybill. Evertything here will eat a garter snake!

I think they have many predators where ever they are. I find garter snakes will often bite if bothered. nice shot :)
