Sounds like you need to do some reading.. Check out www.themonitorspot.com

I believe it still has a great write up on mangroves and their basic care..

my cousin is actually letting me pick between a water monitor or a water monitor. since if he gets the 2 mangrove he has to dispose his water monitor or 1 of the mangrove monitor. which one should i pick out?

monitors arnt disposable!!!
I see this to often even with experienced and educated keepers, the new specie syndrom, they see something new and like kids need to have it, usualy to the detriment of an other animal. This is a typical example, at first it seems like a logical exchange! trading a salvator for the much smaler indicus, a 6+feet vs a 3-5feet, both are quit aquatic and will defecate in water, both have about the same environemantal needs and feeds on basicly the same diets as captives. well here are the hidden facts, most waters will be easyer to care for, most indicus will remain flighty all ther lifes, this and there needle sharp claws eventualy will anoy most keepers, not to mention there ability to defecate on you, sins this is a defence mecanism there stool have a particular smell, that I still dislike after 25 years.
my point is do the reserch and avoid making your cousins mistake, you may find that an other species will satisfy you and your needs.
good luck!

"my cousin is actually letting me pick between a water monitor or a water monitor."
Kind of mean not to give a choice, isn't it?

I dont have too much experience with monitors.....but I know a Water Monitor isnt something you just go off and choose.

They are alot of care....plus they get very big. My 1ft Sav I had was a biotch to handle

thanx for all your help. handling a huge animal being a responsible keeper isnt really a problem since ive been keeping a caiman for a year now. kinda know which bottons not to push.

steve b, my cousin is a kid, he's only 14. he is just spoiled by his parents so when ever he's not taking care of his animals i try to adopt it from time to time.

matt, sorry it was a type-O it was suppose to be mangrove or the water.

thanx for all your help again. im learning alot about monitors just reading thru old foorums and other websites too. and most of all asking questions from you guys.

He shouldnt have any monitors at all if hes 14 sorry, but i doubt if he is just disposing them then he doesnt know what hes doing...not to say 14 year olds cant be smart, but it seems like he shouldnt have reptiles at all. Try and educate him that there not toys

I kept Nile monitors @ 14 years old. My bedroom had 2 8x4 enclosures in it. I dont think age is a factor here, its responsibility.
