I posted before that I was thinking about a 20gal Long, but after actually looking at one I'm not really sure. They don't really look that big. They are kind of skinny.People seem to think that they are a perfect size for a Garter snake though.I was looking at a 30 gallon breeder. It's wider and seems better. But the 20L is $35 and the 30 breeder is $73.I Really didn't want to spend that much on a tank.I would like opinions on tank size.Pictures would be cool too.

I have no picture. All I have is the GAURANTEE that just about any Thamnophis will never outgrow the need for a 20L. Trust any Thamnophis keeper at this. You seriously will not need anything bigger than that. Not many, if any available species at that, will ever grow large enough to need a large tank size as that.
Unless your going with a special lil' vivarium that needs a large tank size to sustain any other living organisms, a 20L is perfect. It may "seem" small to the beginner, but seriously trust a person when they say that it is enough room for a small species that is hardy such as Thamnophis.

so even a 29 or 30 gallon regular tank would be too big??? I was thinking of just going with that.Maybe I'll listen to everyone and go with a 20L.

Thing with Thamnophis, is that they are generally a ground-dwelling snake. That kind of height will not be needed. A 20L is the same length and depth as the 29 gallon. If you wanted to go with a lot of decoration, the other tanks would help place more decoration within the tank, but not really needed room for the snake. All in all it is up to you, but the snakes will do just great in the 20L.

I have seen a 4ft garter snake before (It was the kind with 2 yellow lines, not sure on the kind lol, just that it was a garter) It was pretty long, about 2times the length of a 20 gal long. Maybe it was another snake I seen?
It was black with 2 parrallel yellow/green stripes...sorry don't have a pic.
I would think that to put a 4ft snake in a tank about 2ft long would be pushing it because you also have to have 2 hides and a water bowl, and any other decorations you might want.
Unless of course it wasn't a garter snake I seen? lol
