Hello guys,

I live in a community/co-op, and the house im living in is not mine but i beleive its governments i could be wrong, but they are rented houses, so its a little community thing. Ive been living in it for about 8 years now, and slowly adding more pets to my "collection". But had to be down sized, cause the office, did an inspection and checked out the house to see if it was o.k to live in. A week later they want me to give a list of residing pets in my house, i was like "uh oh!", i recounted and i had 8 pets in total!!!! so i took out the "rule book" and turned to "how many pets i could keep" and it said 4!!!! So now i have downsized it to 5, and selling one more! this really sucks, i wish i have my own house, where theres no such things as "to many pets"

This was a quote from the book, rules etc

Members will not be allowed to keep the following pets in the co-op:

a) exotic pets (such as monkeys, parrots)

b) potentially dangerous pets (such as tarantulas, boa constrictors, pit bulls, bull terriers, and dobermans)

O.k now...how many people in this site own a monkey in the house at the moment? See i hate limits, can't do much about it, if i havnt gotten rid of half the pets i have, i would have been kicked out of the co-op., but now all i have is a chameleon, leopard gecko, and 2 Aquariums, i can only have 2 Aquariums and no more, ugh having a bad day, what do you guys think???

I think rules are rules.

Sorry. It sucks but thats the way it is. Not everyone can own 40+ herps. I suggest if you want to live there, choose out the four things you like keeping the most, and concentrate on making their enviroments amazing and on their care.

Sorry to hear about that, but, as you said, when you move, you'll get your collection back up there in no time. :)

Meow,

Sorry to hear about that, but at least they are counting your aquariums as 1 pet... imagine if each fish counted as a single pet!

Well, I am sure that you will easily rebuild your collection once you move out.

2 aquariums, start using rubbermaids! lol.

Seriously though, I'm sorry about that. I personally think that as long as you are keeping the place clean (not smelling), paying rent on time, and not trashing the place then you should be able to bring whatever animals in the place that you want!

It's just "The Man" trying to stick it to you. Fight the power.

Not everyone likes living next door to a zoo!!!! :D

maybe not, but if there is no smell and no/minimal noise, how do you know what kind of animals your neighbor has?

Like I said, no smell (next to no noise or no noise at all), clean, paying rent on time, not trashing the place. It shouldn't matter what animals you keep.

well thats problem, what the book says, is that its a privilege "not a right", and that i can have 4 pets max. My house is fine, it just needs some repairs in the bathroom. Every year they check out everyones house to see if its inhabitable, but they saw that i have 8 pets, and wanted to see how many i had and what they were. It ticked me off cause i had a limit to how many i had, but rules are rules:(

You can always challenge "The Rules" as the bylaws of the city are different from that of your "Man". That is if you don't mind moving or being treated like pooh by the Powers that Be.

I dont know the details of your coop. I do know that "no pet clauses" are not enforceable in Ontario. Clearly local by-laws will still apply, but it may be the case that they have no legal right to force you to sell. May not be worth the fight, but if you feel strongly, you could get a legal opinion from a lawyer.

NOTE: I am most certainly NOT a lawyer. My opinion is just that...an opinion.

Look for Paralegals in your area. You should be able to find one that can provide you with some info for free.

If you live near the small claims court offices they can easily direct you to one. I didn't find the Scarborough bylaws online but only did a quick google search.
