I know many people don't care for those, but horror movies are, in some ways, my favorites. If you had to pick one, wich would you consider to be a masterpiece? And why?
I have a few : Night of the living dead (original motion picture)
Ghosts of mars
The howling
The dead next door
Darkness falls (it's ok)
just some out of my head. What about you?

I also think that horror movies are the best. I think that King Cobra is because it is a 32 foot long hybrid with the front of a king cobra and the back or an eastern diamondback rattlesnake. In the end it doesn't die or get killed either (yeah!!!)
I'm a huge cheesy horror fan...
Evil Dead 1 & 2 and Army of Darkness (I don't think I even need to explain this....lol :p)
The Midnight Hour (My Dad used to wake me up when I was two or three years old in the middle of the night to watch this)
Return of the Living Dead (Hahaha seriously... the running cadaver and the rigormortis scenes make me laugh so hard! :p)
House of 1000 Corpses (LOL I can't even think of something to explain this one  )
Pretty much any vampire movie - of course the cheesier the better - scores good with me too... HUGE vampire movie freak :eb:
That's all that rolls off the top of my head right now

I forgot that one: House of 1000 corpses. I'm a huge fan of Rob Zombie and his dark trip-hop. There's House of 2000 corpses coming out...
Does anyone remember the gate? Ghoulies - lol. I was really little when I saw that one. I was afraid to use the toilet after for awhile. My mom was a huge sci fi horror fan. When I was 3 or 4 she would make me watch them with her. I would be terrified!!! Remember the howling? That's one of the earliest that I remeber watching, night of the living dead brains, brains. Ahh, I could go on.
Cool thread.

Evil Dead series of course.
Deep Rising was actually a really fun movie, though not really scary.
An American Werewolf in London! Great flick! never saw the sequel though.
The new Dawn of the Dead looks like it has promise.

John Carpenter's remake of the classic, "The Thing", starring Kurt Russell was pretty good.
"It's Alive" scared the crap outta me when I was a kid.
"Basket-Case" was pretty bizarre, although more humorous than scary.
The whole "Alien" series is great, particularly the first one.
The "Evil Dead" series is good, too.
And, the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is still a classic...somewhat tame by today's standards, but at the time it was really something. I mean, the guy who played the hitch-hiker at the beginning...? Weird and extremely well-played.

A slightly different genre of horror, but I love old monster movies. Creature from the Black Lagoon is tops. beyond the rest of the classic universal monsters, there were some great and some hillariously bad monster flicks.
Older Horrors:
Chopping Mall
April Fools
Nightmare on Elm Street
Dawn Of The Dead
many more....
Newer Horrors:
Wrong Turn
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Freedy Vs. Jason (wasn't THAT bad)

"The Shining", hands down for me....
I really don't scare easily, but I can still completely freak myself out just by thinking of those damn twin girls.....
Kubrick's direction and musical score don't help either.

"Cube" or "Hypercube" was mentioned. I saw it recently and it did infact put a different spin on what we perceive as reality and time-space relations. My favourite horror movie of all time has got to be The Exorcist. I also like Event Horizon.
Currently, my university class in Cinema and Modernity is studying the horror genre. The reasons that people watch horror movies is what interests me. We have discussed in class how the "monsters" in horror movies are physical manifestations of fears or insecurities that we are otherwise unable to address. By displacing this fear onto a "monster", it therefore becomes defeatable. However, since the nature of our fears that we internalize never really cease to exist, the "monsters" continually pop up or rise again to haunt us. The analysis becomes much more detailed, but this is the basic idea.

My faves are:
Gothika (well, it was more of a thriller, but, still scared the poo out of me)
The 7th Sign
The Exorcist
House Of 1000 Corpses (Only from the mind of Rob Zombie :D )
The Shining
Evil Dead I, II, and Army Of Darkness
Nightmare On Elm Street 3 (I think): Dream Warriors
13 Ghosts
Poltergiest II
Aliens (Yeah, it's a Sci-Fi, but, the creatures could scare most children out of their wits)
Event Horizon *shudder*
Pet Cemetary
Dead Alive (That lawnmower scene was the best! *L*)
The Amityville Horror
It
Night Breed
The Lost Boys (Not really scary, but the vampire theme classifies it as a horror)
Bram Stoker's Dracula
Blair Witch Project 2
"Steel Magnolias", I still shudder thinking about it. That was a horror, right?....
HAHAHAHAAHAHA Mykee, that 'My Best Friends Wedding' and 'Beaches'
Don't forget Ya-Ya. That's some serious fetal position-inducing stuff right there. Enough to make a grown man cry like a little schoolgirl.

Evil Dead for sure. Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell all the way!
Pet Cemetary! When Rachel's sister gets up of the bed and creeps towards her? YIKES. That's creepy.
The Exorcist. Of course.
Wrong Turn. Ha ha, that chick is a BABE!

Man, i've heard so much about "Wrong turn" and never really saw it. I gotta...
There's this other movie "Cabin fever" that i heard about. Is it any good?
I'm surprised nobody picked the classic "Company of wolves".
Hey, Reddragon, you're really into the SCARY ones. Gee, 13 ghosts, Pet sematary (spelled this way) and Exorcist were freaky.
But Rob Zombie has got to be the man with me most twisted mind on the planet."She's got a corpse under her bed...She's had her fun but now he's dead!" Is this stuff great or what? ;)

I love ALL horror movies, My dad is a HUGE Stephen King fan and he turned me into one also. I remember sitting there as a little girl watching firestarter and IT and anything else scary.
All the classics of course, but i will list a few of my personal favorites.
Silence of the Lamb, I think this is my favorite cause i was home alone and it was pitch dark through the house (the only way to watch scary movies) and it scared the poo out of me, plus their was a guy staring in at me from my window and my brother and his friend were on the roof (don't ask, that was were they hung out at times, and i didnt' know they were there) and they jumped off the roof to tackle him. Plus i had to watch it a few times to understand everything. Anthony hopkins Does such a great job!!!
Dee Sniders Strangeland, That movie was just great, completly different from the normal, hehe Capt. Howdy.
IT- They all float down here... Need i say more.
Cujo- GREAT, GREAT movie!!!! makes you think twice about a St. Benard. LOL
I could go on forever, I've pretty much seen them all and enjoy all of them, Including all the movies that other people have listed already. I love watching the exorcist for a great laugh, don't know why but scary movies make me laugh my butt off.
The remake of Dawn of the Dead comes out soon, My bf got passes to check out a special screening of it, so we are going on March 16th to see it, can't wait.

i thought cabin fever sucked.
28 days later i liked, but it wasnt really that scary
When i was a kid i saw the first half of IT on tv and that was all -i was freaked out for weeks.
I thought The Ring was scary-hair on my neck was standing up for most of the movie.
havent seen House of a thousand corpses yet,but ill get around to it - ive heard nothing but good reviews from people.

OH! I forgot about 28 Days Later. Now THAT was a good flick!
Cabin Fever wasn't that great, but what can you expect from a horror???

28 days later sucked :P But I do want to see cabin fever, there is a new one out called Taking lives i think I wanna see. There sure are alot of good flicks listed here though :) sorry guys the ring sucked too :P One kick and that little girl would have fallen ;) How can anyone be scared of a hald rotten little girl lol.
I Can never watch a horror movie the same again ever since I watched scary movie 2 lol it has just ruined the whole horror thing for me ;)

Pirranha, i warn you that House of 1000 corpses is not your traditional kind of movie, most people come out of it saying " What the hell was that all about? Weird movie..."
You have to be tuned into that whole no-sense type of film to enjoy it. Then again, It's a Rob Zombie product so...
vanderkm

American Werewolf in London still tops my list - great for its time - a classic.

*LOL* That's me all the way, if it doesn't scare the bejesus out of me, it's not really worth it. If it doesn't scare me, then it has to be really gory or have a decent story line (I know, that's rare for horror movies, but a few of the ones I listed have some great story lines to them.) :)

i dont really have any expectations for what 1000 corpses is supposed to be like, other than really scary.I gotta be in the mood for it too though.i read a bio of rob zombie along time ago that said he wanted to make a movie someday and he said he had alot of good ideas for a better horror movie than the usual

American werewolf in London was very good, but this last movie of it in Paris is not so great. too much cgi, makes the whole thing look like a cartoon. Well, the best about it was the song by Bush (Mouth).

Definitly 13 Ghosts, Pet Semetary 2, Jeepers Creepers, Ghost Ship. i think House of 1000 Corpses was kind of stupid. it was freaky though. what really freaks me out when im watching movies like that and thinking 'what if that was me'. i scare myself more than movies do lol.
How about good old nightmare on elm street "whatever you do don't fall asleep" and I would do my best not to.hehehe.
Candyman-that was kinda creeper too.

I saw house of 1000 corpses with my sister in the theater....we were both so disturbed when we left!!! scared the **** out of both of us. She saw it again and said that away from the surround sound and HUGE screen it wasn't that scary....I doubt I'll be able to watch it again though ;)

I’m just too much of a sissy to watch scary movies. If I go to the theater, I’ve got to hold onto someone and keep covering my eyes. If I watch at home I have to keep turning the sound down. It’s much less scary that way.
My vote goes for Silence of the Lambs. I saw it at home alone and had to watch it twice that night because the first time I had the sound turned off too much.
Also, the first Alien movie. The soundtrack at the theater was deafening and unremitting. Plus it was filmed so dark, it left a little to your imagination which is usually superior – whether it’s a horror movie or a love story.

JIMMYDAVID:
Horror movies now are more just another form of comedy movies to me. Althought some physicological thillers do tag me pretty good at times but nothing was like what EXORCIST 1 did to me when I was 7 years old on a Halloween night watching that movie. Now years later its just dumb and funny. As you can see
I am not the scare me please idea, with bogus makeup and dumb creepy story lines.
LOL.

some horror flicks are funny as hell....like the Evil Dead's...very fun but not very scary....stuff like Castle Freak, the Unnameable, 13 Ghosts and the Ring really give me a scare. When I was a kid the Thing was my thing..lol...it scared me senseless but I loved it...I saw an action figure of the Thing at a video store a while back and I'm still kicking myself for not getting it..

I'm suprised at how many evil dead fans there are as well.
Army of Darkness for sure the best of the three.
So many classic lines.
I read somewhere they wanted to do a Freddy vs Jason vs Army of Darkness(or Ash I'm not sure)
I dont know if there was any truth to it though

I heart cheesey horror movies. Here's a few worth renting:
Jack Frost (1 &2)
The Pool
Python
Uncle Sam
The Order (not horror but real bad)
House of 1000 corpses was kick *** btw.
Horrors/Thrillers have me on edge when I watch them, hurts katey's arm the way I jump and squeeze.
My all time favourite is Event Horizon... I didn't know which way was up.
Resident Evil really freaked me out, gave me a real sick feeling in my stomach, I didn't even finish the movie.
