Since the snow is starting to melt im thinking about getting some dirt to replace the temporary mulch. I was thinking about how they would dig burrows, wouldnt the dirt colapse on them? And even if i sprayed the tank, how often would i have to do it so it wouldnt become almost like sandish. So i was thinking of an idea that could serve as a underground den and protect it from caving in...it could also be the basking spot
is this practicle, or do i not even have to do this...please explain how the dirt will stay "up"
it would be a wooden box inside the dirt with part sticking out and an entrence on the right...then they can get in and out and it would seem like its udnerground..which it really is.

Looks ok. I would do deeper dirt and pile the thing(hide) almost full of dirt iwht about 1 inch of space. The sav will excavate to the depth it wants. In the cage you have right now, i would put those staircase with the basking spot thing on top of that hide you have proposed. Im not too sure how the dirt stays "up". I would like to know too.

I think you're doing a good job man. Considering most don't even ask questions and leave their savs on newspaper their whole lives, you're going the extra mile.
that new setup looks pretty decent make sure you give him adequate hides with good humidity (70's)
Alot of people would still criticize your setup, but like i said its more than what most would do, and in my opinion the animal should do pretty well in there! good luck.

Yea taht was just a rough sketch of the cavern idea, i just added like water dish and hide and all that for whatever, and the depth of the dirt is also not to scale or anything...im planning on building him a new tank (6x2x2) and adding like 10 inches of dirt, but thats not for like 2 months probably...
thanks!

It looks like a very professional blueprint! Lol. It looks good though.

if you are going to be building a new enclosure anyway, any chance of making it a bit taller and putting in more than 10 inches of dirt?

Excellent advice doc. Unless you already got the supplies for your new enclosure, Adam.
