Howdy all!

How big are your adult Burmese Pythons, Rock Pythons, and Super Dwarf, Dwarf, and Regular Reticulated Pythons?

I've owned many retics in the past, but currently i keep only 2. The biggest is 11 feet.
My biggest burm is 21 feet and my biggest rock about 9 or 10 feet.
Sorry, no dwarfs so far.

She's very well known in the net. She's called Anastacia.
Search around for photos. Try www.pythonmolurus.com to start with (although pics are old).

One of these days i'll get you recent pics and you will not believe your eyes...
"Baby", pfff. (just kidding)

I have a question about that. I measured my burm at about 3 and a half feet. He has just shed so I think he's prolly around 4 feet. The thing that bothers me is he's about a year old. When I got him everyone (Pet Stores and suppliers) was telling me he'd be 6-10 feet in a year.... I thought the 10 was a little bit of an over estimate but he's only about 4 feet. Is that a healthy size for a burm about a year old? I'm guessing people will say that every burm is different. I just want to make sure that there isn't a real problem.

What are you feeding him and how often? My yearlings are over 7ft. . It seems to me that he should be bigger. Have you kept giants before?

Janus
03-02-04, 03:16 AM
Nope he's my first giant. The funny thing is until a couple months ago.... I was feeding him about twice a week 2-3 large mice per feeding. Sometimes they have retired feeders and sometimes they just have smaller ones. Around December he was about 36 inches I switched him to small rats. I fed him 1-2 small rats 1-2 times a week. Now I feed him 1 med rat once a week. It always depended on size. If they were small that week I would feed more if they were large then a smaller amount.

Well, Anastacia was over 12 feet on her first year, but she's one of a kind genetic freak. Anyway, 8 or 9 feet is possible with most females.
Maybe these tips will help if you want to beef up your python:
1-Don't get too stuck on a schedule. try giving the snake food whenever at random. You'll see they will eat more that way.
2-I read somewhere that small items are not good for growth (this theory is not mine). Seems like having a very full stomach produces more growth hormones, so probably a large meal will work better than 3 or 4 small meals. I don't know if this is true, but try it.
3-Exercise will increase the need for food. handle plenty and she will eat plenty.
4-Keep hot temps (this one is old).
5-I don't know what kind of heating setup you have, but all the snakes i've had under red light bulbs have grown much more than others with other sistems. I see a pattern here...

I Hope you have good luck.

My burm is a little over 8 feet. He is 9 months old, I'm gueesing he will be over 10 feet at one year!

Wow I didn't think they could get over 10 in a year I thought that would take a couple of years. I'm not exactly on a schedule I feed him all the time. Those numbers are pretty much the average. I have fed him up to 3-4 times in a week but for the most part its just 1-2. Heh I was handling my burm like every other day, until about 2 weeks ago(I'm a student I had a bunch of test). The burm is in a 100 gallon tank right now the tank if about 5 feet by 18 inches by 18 inches. On the hot side its about 91 degrees and on the cold its about 77. The burm stays on the hot side almost always. I havn't tried the red bulbs but I'm not in a hurry to get him big. I figure he'll get there when he gets there. My main concern is that a healthy size?

at 4 feet my burm eats two medium to large size rats a week and soon he will be eating large to jumbo rats. my 4 foot burm is only 4 months old and he is a male, witch are usually smaller. at this rate he should be 8-10 feet at one year old. mice are too small burms like to eat big. at one month old my burm was already eating small rats. good luck!!!!!!!!

He should be able to eat jumbo's at 4 feet, mine was eating 2 jumbo's a week at 4 feet, at a little over 6 feet I switched him to rabbit's.

CHRISANDBOIDS14:

We only have 1 of that list being our Albino Burmese Python at 10 feet plus maybe 10' 4" or so. Most docile burm I know and super lazy, put a rabbit infront of it and it starts swallowing it straight no fight not show just feed and go, lol.

how old and what size does your male have?

Jeff Hathaway
03-17-04, 01:24 AM
Sure, they can be 10' in a year, but should they? Is it healthy?

I firmly believe that most large constrictors are severely overfed in captivity. Look at the growth rates for wild specimens (if they are available) or at least at the girth: length ratio of a wild specimen.

For example, Burmies, your snake looks quite obese to me. I doubt that a wild 11 footer would be anywhere near that heavy.

My Male Labyrinth het. Albino Labyrinth is at 6ft:)

XtremeReptiles
03-17-04, 03:31 PM
To add...the size of the snake depends on the feeding. As long as the snake isnt excessively heavy and 10' its fine.....but its obese then obviously not haha. My male Burm is 6'(as read above) and he has great weight....so obviously he is a good size yearling.

But again the MAIN thing is amount of food.

Yes she is! Shes a fatty too! Just how i LIke em;)

Burmies
03-17-04, 08:01 PM
She's no fatty, she has never been starved and never skipped a meal. This is why she is so big. Plus she will make a great breeder this year. You really have to see her in person. Besides she only gets a full grown rabbit every two weeks.

Jeff Hathaway
03-17-04, 10:34 PM
Starvation or skipping meals has nothing to do with whether she's obese. If total calories in is vastly greater than total calories used by growth, reproduction, and locomotion, she'll add fat! Have you ever necropsied a snake, and seen all the fat bodies present? Now having some is obviously a good thing, but I'm telling you, your burm is obese. This has been proven to be a health hazard in most animals, including humans, and I'd bet plenty that it isn't very good for snakes in the long term. Of course, it can make them great breeders in the short term, but this is ignoring the health of the animal.

Funny, but i thought there would be bigger burms around here. Seems like there's a lack of large burms lately. Where are they?
Could it be that Anastacia is really the biggest one after Baby? I searched all over the net and (except for Baby) could not find one over 330 pounds.

ya I always wonder where the big ones go. freezer? there never seems to be a shortage of people with young ones. I always wonder how many people get big pythons because they are "cool" but have no long term commitment to the animals. They are really cool but I know I'll never own own because they are too much responsability.
