Wow, yet another place that has banned even little kenyan sand boas. How stupid.

This is not unusual. Barrie's law has been around for awhile, as have many other municipalities' by-laws. The intent was generally to prohibit large constrictors. Unfortunately, they didn't specify.

I am pretty sure the sale of humans is covered under criminal law, not municipal bylaws ;)

The thing with these bylaws is that city council would never have even considered snakes, let alone banning them unless some Peon decided to take his retic for a walk to a school yard, and they got complaints up the ying yang.

How long has this law been around? I am sure I have seen baby burms and balls in the pet stores within the last couple years.

Stores are exempt from those laws, they can sell a 25' retic but the buyer cannot own it! Pretty stupid huh? They need to consider what they should be allowed to keep and what not.

Barrie stores are not exempt from those laws. I know of a situation of a Barrie store selling pythons and boas in the back room and by-law officers were called, they had to stop or face charges. Even Display animals have to have special permits even if they are not for sale, a Barrie store had to apply for permits to display to large Burmese pythons a 13 ft and an 18 ft in the store, for educational purposes, took a while to get those too.

and what about those sugar gliders, i cant quite figure that one......they'll rip your arm right off and teeth longer then knives....

O. Thanks. I thought most stores were. LOL. But it is correct that some stores are exempt from laws like that correct? I wonder if my pet skunk, badger, and grizzly bear are going to get removed here in Edmonton. Ohh noooo. I hope not. They are sooooo nice to me. Never even bit or sprayed. LOL.

someone should write them a witty letter.

how are they going to know that you actually have one in your home? i mean its not like they are just going to randomly search your house for a snake.

Want an interesting twist? Edmonton's new bylaws (as of last summer) forbid the posession of any animal (and their offspring/young) whose adult form typically exceeds 10kg.....this effectively makes boas, blood pythons, and large tortoises illegal in Edmonton, although I am sure that it was not intended to do so when it was written.

...and thanks to an accidental exemption of an exemption, gerbils are technically illegal in Alberta.

From a person carelessly displaying it, or someone ratting them out after an argument/break-up.

good point about the break-up/argument thing.

oh yeah, here in Ohio if you have an exotic animal with a ferocious temper, then it is illegal to keep the animal (so i guess that means i cant keep my tokay but i dont care) and if any animal has bitten someone besides the owner more than twice then the animal is to be put down or gotten rid of (again i guess i cant keep my tokay)

I just think that the by-law is dumb. These were made by people who have no clue. Funny how one incident where a snake got lose can change laws yet how many dogs attack people each year in a givin area. If you try to fight to change that law, they might check to see what you do own...lol

you cant fight it alone or just in one area you would need lots of many people to cover lots of different areas to get some decent publicity.

As much as that weight is a little low and covers many "harmless" species, I think bans on things accourding to weights is a MUCH better idea than outright bans, etc. I think if you are willing to own an animal like a retic, burm or giant tortoise then you should also be willing to research to make sure your location is acceptable in the law and if not, move. The responsibility of these large creatures is something 100% different than most snakes, and the owners should be 100% different from average small species keepers. It's far better like that then just banning all pythons, boas, etc.

The same kind of idiots that keep Boas, Pythons, tigers, alligators, Geckos, Iguanas, monitors, snapping turtles, giant roaches, mantids, and cripe sakes, tarantulas and those icky cricket thingies
what's the world coming to :)

never forget that our minority is no bigger or better than many others. Those in glass houses....
Ok, I admit Hyenas, might be a stretch, but then I don't really know.
Is there a Rubbermaid that will hold them?

No, its not that this time buddy! There'd be more spelling mistakes. LOL
I met a girl once that thought I was insane for keeping snakes. Then she told me she had 2 rabbits, 5 chinchillas, a hedgehog and a gerbil.
I asked her if she wanted to get together for dinner! :)
