Do we ever get a show to go to??

There has never been a reptile show in Saskatchewan that I am aware of.

We have considered putting one on, and might still.

The reasons we haven't so far, are:
1) There aren't many breeders in Saskatchewan
2) I think many out of province breeders would be reluctant to come to a show where they can not sell boas or pythons.
3) Red Deer isn't that far of a drive, and it is Canada's largest and best show

Who would ride the tractors and scare away the gophers if everyone was at a reptile show?

I would attend as a vendor... for sure. :)

We (The MHS) have been kicking around the idea of a show in Winnipeg (or just outside the city to avoid the by-laws) in the next few years.... Start small and try to build it up. Who knows? We are out in the middle of nowhere... :D

the Calgary Fall show can be from I think 10000-30000ft2. We should have about 100 or more tables at the show for both days. The spring show is in a smaller venue so it has about 70-80 tables

You going to come out to one of our shows Jordan?

Tim, let us know if you will be trying for a Manitoba show - we would be interested in coming out.

You guys would be the first people I'd call. :)

A big concern would be: how do I convince any breeders from Alberta, BC or Ontario to come all this way when they have several shows of their own each season?

With the restrictions on certain boids, how would that affect breeders/vendors on what they could bring and sell?

One would have to check with local bylaw enforcement about that Jeff. As an example, there is a show being planned around TO in a city that has a bylaw of "NO reptiles."
I contacted the bylaw department and after some investigation and such, they decided there is nothing wrong with having the show and outsiders attending as vendors. There is no bylaw against selling reptiles, just keeping/raising them ;)

Jeff, for our situation in Winnipeg, I would have to talk to someone about that. Hopefully they would "let it go" like Jon mentioned. We aren't as restricted as Sask (no boids period), but there are certain species on the by-law that are quite commonly kept and sold at shows.

Either way, if we held a show JUST outside the city limits, we're under no obligation to follow any of that "bogus" by-law. :D

In Saskatchewan, you could get display permits to display boas and pythons at the show.

For pre-arranged sales to out of province people attending the show, you could apply for a import permit for you, and export permit for the buyer.

These permits are free, but they do require at least a week to issue them.

So a reptile show in Saskacthewan that had boids in it would consist of non-Saskatchewan boid breeders selling their boids to non-Saskatchewan herpers? I don't see why a boid breeder would go to Saskacthewan to do that? LOL!

Yeah Jeff, If you read my first post on the subject....

But you asked, so I answered. To tell you the truth, boid breeders usually smell funny, so we won't miss you guys if we do have a show :)

You'd probably screw up your directions on the way here and end up somewhere south of the border anyways :)

That's because we'd end up somewhere flat, with nothing in site, and think we've found Syberia with wheat or something!

LOL! ;)

A show in Saskatchewan would be just that for the boid breeders, a venue to display the species they work with to prospective buyers. Since sales in Saskatchewan would be to non-reisdents, it would make sense to bring animals for display in place of animals for sale. Out of province people would possibly be ill-prepared to deal with a spontaneous purchase. Pre-arranged purchases could proceed as they do every where else.

I say have it in sask that would be great I guarantee that there would be a good showing. Permits who would be their to check for them. When I go to bird shows they always say I need permits to buy pheasants and such but have never checked if I have one thank god. I heard you can get a day permit for free, then photo copy it and give them out to anyone.

Man, that would be a LOT of work just to showcase your animals. I mean, packing everything up, dragging the animals to a province where boids are not allowed, to show to people that don't even live in that province, in hopes that they might....?

I like the internet. Easier on me, easier on the animals.

The only benefit I could see is that maybe the "powers that be" would attend the show and then maybe the provincial legislation might be changed to allow boids. But that's about it. I don't think taking animals to a neutral site just to show them off is a sound business practice. They have travelling menageries for that.

Trust me Jeff, it is a he!! of a lot of work to do exactly that. Ryan and I do it quite regularly, with our 'travelling menagerie'. The permits and health certificates required to travel out of province in compliance with provincial laws are only a small part of the work involved. It is a matter of personal preference - if the show doesnt appeal to you, or it doesnt suit your purpose, simply stay home. We have chosen to put the effort into some shows, and stay home from others, based on just that.

Yeah Jeff, don't worry about it too much, you haven't even been invited to a show yet.

I wouldn't expect you to come to a Saskatchewan show, you didn't even go to the B.C show to support it.

No need to get your panties in a knot over a Saskatchewan show. We have enough fun hosting the spring and fall snake counts. There are a few people who will make the effort to attend, and we have a great time all weekend. It doesnt cost anything but the trip to get here, and we provide great food, drink and socializing, as well as fantastic densite visits. Those of you who have been out know what we mean.
