every had a reptile that you were just scared shitless of? lol excuse my language. but seriously.. one you have, or have had, or know of.
just wondering. my bf is afraid of our tegu because he snaps at him everytime he puts his hand in the enclosure. he works all day so he doesnt see how much time and effort i put into our other herps to get them they way they are now. i think that he thinks everything should be tame as soon as you get it.. i cant get it into his head that it takes time. its kind of funny though. he wouldnt shut up until we got one, and now he's afraid of it.

I can't think of a reptile I'm scared of, but I'm terrified of medium-sized spiders. I don't mind the mini ones or the tarantula-like ones, but those ones with the long skinny legs (that are big for Ontario spiders) freak me out! I think it's the legs that scare me most. I can't think of anything else in the world that I'm more scared of than those guys.

I had one I was really scared of when I worked at a pet shop. It was a huge nile monitor and the thing just went crazy everytime it saw me. When other people were around it was calm and normal (couldnt touch it) but when I came around it unleashed the gates of hell on its enclosure. It was crazy.

lol o.k dont laugh:p, even tho this is a snake site, i am the lizard type of guy, i have never in my life touch a snake, with my bare hands, im not afarid, but i just dont like things that bite, the media has done really well, and made me stay away from them. The fangs, so i stay away, one of my goals this year to touch one,and mayb ill turn around and get into snakes. So im dong more research to find how they really behave

Id have to say im affraid of crocs/gators...never seen one in the wild but at reptilia, petstore near me, they have an american alligator which is probably 6 feet...a killer i hear :) But the guy who manages the place holds him with no problems, not even anything round his mouth!

Yes! I am the captive at this house.

The thought of animal teeth going into me drives me nuts. I take the bites but it really isn't me fav part of keeping.

komodo dragons make me really respectful towards them. when i working at TZ i was helping close down for the evening. the guy called the komodo over and all i heard was a loud BANG on the door. this was a metal door and i thought the thing was about to knock it down. just amazing speed amazing strength.

snakes, spiders, monitors, don't really phase me as long as i have the proper tools for the job. even big iggys i can handle with gloves/long sleeves. the only animal in my collection that really intimmidates me (you can laugh all you want) is my little tokay gecko! she's pissy as all hell and that bark-and-lunge gets me every time!

I'm scared of spiders that are really fast and have long skinny legs. They creep me out. I just got chills...

Not reptile related, but I'm also afraid of deep water where you can't see what's underneath you. Not in a swimming pool, but in the Ocean.

I have a true love for all reptiles but my first lizard was savannah monitor. He put on quite a show when I got near him... Puffing, hissing, tail whipping... I soon learned that he was all bark and no bite (mostly LOL) And he grew to be one of my favourite pets.
He only managed to get ahold of me twice :)

spiders, crickets, meal worms, those kind of things, lol. Those are whats stopping me from getting leo geckos, chams, cresties....I hate crickets, especially those mutated looking cave crickets that look like a cross between spiders and crickets........eck.....eww...!

Ya not herp related. But If I'm swimming, and I swim out to where I can't touch the bottom, and I can't see the bottom, I flip out! I don't like going in past my waist if I can't see the bottom of wherever I'm swimming.

And I'm afraid of whats in the dark. You know, when you get that feeling someones watching you, but no one is there...Especially when your tripping your way to the bathroom at 3 in the morning.

I am not afraid of any animal or invertabrate. I have a very strong respect for them all, but I can't think of one that I'm actually scared of. After hadling venomouse snakes and spiders bare handed you really get a respect for them. Knowing that they have the ability to seriously injur you, yet don't... Kinda makes you adore the animals.

I'm not afraid of any animals either. I respect them, and I'm caution, but what **really** scares me is plumbing. I'm terrified of like water heaters, urinals, drains, dirty bathrooms, stuff like that to the point where I can't go in the vast majority of restroom - public and private alike. :) I have the strangest phobia ever!

I can't think of any reptiles that I'd be phobic of, but I still wouldn't want to get bit by a bunch.

A lot of people seem to be nervous about deep water. I grew up on the east cost and we swam across the channel in the bay near my house (80 feet deep) and it's like you can feel the depth beneath you. I was always nervous in the back of my mind that a shark would come along, but what kind of shark would be found in those waters right? Then they caught the largest great white shark on record in those waters when I was 11. D'oh!

(if interested just do a search for PEI, great white, 1983) :)

I used to be real afraid ( but curious if there was glass seperating us) of snakes, until i decieded it was time to get over that so i bought some corn snakes.

I really like tarantula's but they irritate my skin ALOT so i can't hold them.

I wouldn't quite call it scared more intimadated and cautions of aggressive species. kinda like my Neo (cham) i'm not scared of him but i'm cautious, cause i really don't want to be bit.

Don't think I am scared of any reptile... i'm just careful around the ones I have to be careful around and act according to the danger involved. If I was scared I would not have "hand fed" a 16ft salt water croc but at the same time I wasn't gonna let it eat out of my hand either. :P

I'm not scared of any of them, but there are two that would intimidate me and those are king Cobras and Russell's Vipers. Both would be my dream captures in the wild. I'm hoping to gain some experience with Kings in the near future.

Im nervous around really big boids that I don't know are friendly and some snakes that seem really aggresive. The largest snake I've ever handled was a 12ft burm (man did she do a number on my back) but I knew her and I knew she was gentle. I haven't had alot of exposure to any lizards that weren't friendly or wouldn't run away from you on sight, so Im not really afraid of them. The animals that really make my gut flip are big cats though. When theres a fence between or I know for sure its a gentle cat Im fine. But its those ones that might decided they're more interested in you then their breakfast that make me shiver. I guess I picked the wrong profession.

I am not afraid of any reptiles, however I do have a healthy respect for those that can inflict serious injury if you do not respect them.

They aren't reptiles, but I do have a silly irrational fear of many spiders... Daddy Long Legs take the cake. I like the little white spiders, and in fact had a whole bunch of them living in my car one summer. Jumping spiders are cute o> Most tarantulas are gorgeous IMO, however they give me a serious case of the heebie jeebies, some more than others. I would really like one as a pet, but I'm not sure how feasible that is...

I am scared crapless of my own Tarantulas. Yet in the two years+ of owning T's I have yet to have to handle one. I just use a deli cup for moving from dirty to clean cage. LOL

If one got out I would be hostage in my own house hiding in a corner most likely.

Well,

Im not "scared" of anything but the one reptile that REALLY intimidates me and no offence to anyone but I really dislike green iguanas ALOT. They also intimidate me cause i have had a 5ft iggy(1 ft of tail missing), 15lbs, chase me 30ft through a pet store I occasionally volunteer at. I have held 10" - 4ft iggys about 6-10 times but that was for cleaning purposes. Also, a really funny thing is i absolutely HATE hampsters. I know they are not a herp but i would rather hold almost any herp than a hampster. I swear they are out to get me.

On the other hand, i do have a very good respect for any herps. I will always act accordingly. The biggest herp i have held was probably a 9ft, 40lb albino burm(he was a BEAUTY). I was about 10 and this thing was pretty big for me at the time but i was in no way scared. I was probably abit timid but not really scared. This was at a Snake Farm in New Braunfels, Texas(right beside san antonio). They also had i think I 23ft(not sure on sizes) female green annaconda and 15ft male. The female was pregnant but they let me touch the male. It was pretty sweet. I was again not scared but i knew the strength this things had and was very respecful of it. So there yah go. I kid that would love a 25' retic but not a hampster! HAHAHA. I actually laugh at myself for that. I think im very weird:D. LOL.

When I worked exploration in S. Africa in the Kalahari Desert I had concerns over Black Mambas, Cobras & Puff Adders. I wasn't scared of them, but more so of what they could do to me. Due to the remote location of the program I would have died a long painful death if any of these snakes had tagged me. I had a couple of real close encounters with Puff Adders that very easily could have been the end of me. Ah the things we do for money eh! Mark
P.S. Oh yeah Tarantulas still give me the hibbee jibbees, but not so bad anymore. I never used to care for snakes much either. My how things have changed! :D

What fangs? unless the snake has venom with a delivery system (ie cobras), there are no fangs.

A friend of mine had (still has, i think) big water monitors. He was crazy because he would handle them all the time even though they were mean as hell. The guy had huge scars on his arms from bites of those beasts. I remember how afraid i was of his monitors...
The funny thing is that his biggest salvator (over 9 feet and the largest lizard of any kind i ever saw ) was also the tamest one. You could pet the creature around and touch him in the head. He would close his eyes like he was enjoying it. But the other monitors were pure fury. Scary!!

Then they wouldn't be necessarily scared of the reptile, but scared of the situation. There are a lot of scary situations that involve things that we wouldn't otherwise pay any attention to or that we feel comfortable with.

Yes, true. Well in my case, even it were at a zoo and I was next to a 15 ft croc, not seperated by glass or anything, I would be fearful. Fear is what keeps people on their toes in those situations.
Have you ever noticed Steve Irwin when he is handling either a highly venenomous snake or encounters an animal that he knows is dangerous. He will tremble with fear and will admit it. I guess its not that he is "scared" to touch the snake or whatever, but that kinda fear gives people a rush. (i.e. SKYDIVING!!!)

Definately the spiders for me. They just have way too many legs I think ;) Tarantulas give me the creeps, especially. I'm always somewhat nervous of handling big boxes that have been sitting in the basement. I have 'found' many spiders that way.. and daddy longlegs.. ICK. Attractive, I don't think ;) I'm sure there's a multitude of venomous snake species I would be nervous to encounter.

What's funny is I have bred mice and rats and yet if I saw a wild one anywhere in the house I would probably jump and want it out right away. Especially wild rats (and I own a pet rat). Probably partly because of the association of disease.

I am generally afraid of the unknown. The things that I don't have experience w/ I am afraid of. I was afraid of arachnids before I got them. Once you know thier behaviour and how they react, it's not scary. Same with anything else. Once your educated and experienced it's all good. I am certainly afraid of any large monitors, large constrictors, crocodilians, venomous etc. I am sure that once I had the education and experience of dealing w/ them I would be fine, (although I don't have any plans for keeping any of them).

There was an experiment done by these guys called Watson and Raynor on this baby named Albert where they introduced a rat and then scared the baby with a loud clap when the rat would appear. Eventually Albert became scared of rats because of the association with the scary stimuli that followed. But he started to generalize the fear and eventually became scared of everything small and fluffy, including teddy bears. Apparently he spent his whole life scared of them. I think that shows that we can learn to be scared of almost anything.

That doesn't constitute a phobia. That's like saying someone is affraid of cars if they get scared to see one speeding directly at them.

HeatherK
02-28-04, 10:52 AM
chamitch: How many mice do you have to a tank? The only time mice will really canibalize one another is when one is already dead, lack of food (which you stated isn't the case), or overcrowded/stressful conditions (I have heard of females killing males but I think that's more reserved to when a male enters their territory)

djc3674
02-28-04, 01:07 PM
That doesn't constitute a phobia.

Well if you read the question...it asks nothing about a phobia. Just if your afraid of any reptiles? As I said, for me I would be scared to be next to an adult croc weather it were coming after me or not. I guess it's like someone said about "fear of the unknown". Something that big and powerful that can kill you in an instant...is scary. Most likely my fear would subside if I were to learn more about them and have more encounters with them. This is not a phobia, cause if I had the opportunity (in somewhat of a controlled setting) to get close to one..I definately would...but be scared as hell the whole time.

It is also proven when you show a snake to a young child say five, and a teen, the five year old will mostlikely want to hold it, watch it etc., while most teens are scared of them, taught by their parents whom are probably afraid too.

Until we got our Tarantula, I was terrified of spiders.........before we got her, I did a lot of research on them and the more I learned about them, the less I feared them. I think the "fear of the unknown" is a very common condition. I always thought that a spiders goal in life was to find me and bite me (LOL, irrational I know) but once I started to realise what they are really like, I feared them less and less.

You should never be affraid of or scared shitless of a reptile........ One thing that you should do is respect them.......... Especially the ones that can be dangerous......... The fear of snakes, spiders, lizards, ang bugs is not a natural fear....... It is usually passed on to you at a young age........ Usually by some event or by learning the fear from someone else........ There will never be anything to fear if you have respect for an animal and keep a healthy distance away from the ones that can hurt or kill you......
