we were planning to buy an argus monitor that a herp shop a few towns over was holding for us until we get the money.. but we went to another shop that we frequent and there was this beautiful little girl.. a savannah monitor. she's a little over a foot long and is really chubby :) she loves pinkys and jumbo crickets and likes to lick rocks lol. she has her own little attitude though.. hissing when we walk by her enclosure.. and occasionally thinking our hands are food :( . she's extremely docile for the most part though. she doesnt mind being handled much at all, as long as your sitting down with her. she doesnt like being held mid air though. i think of her as another one of our rescues though. the guy that had her before the shop held her daily and kept her in great health, but he got a new job and couldnt take her with him, so he sold her to the shop. they said she had been there a few weeks because nobody around her wants large ones.. everyone wants a little gecko or something cute like that. they were happy that we decided to take her. we are too. :) ill post some pics as soon as i get my cam fixed.

Congrats...i recently got a savannah, bout 3 months ago, and its the best thing ive ever done. There very intelligent animals and great to watch. Its also fun to see them eat, there fast! If you want a good read, get the book called The Savannah Monitor Lizard by Ravi Thakoordyal and Daniel Bennett...its an incredible read with lots of good info on captive and wild savs. Good luck with the lil guy, cant wait for some pics!

oh yea shes really intelligent. i can tell already. we're keeping her in our temporary cage we've used for all the large herps at some point until we can get her custom done. we never had to lock it with the others, but she's paid attention and has already been trying to raise up the top door, so we had to start locking it. you can tell when she's trying to figure something out just by watching her look at things and examining them. i just love to sit and watch her do that. its amazing.

GREAT book, easily the best that has been written about keeping Savs in captivity.

Savs remind me of the Raptors from jurasic park :D
