Sarah Brightman

Some of you know this, some of you will be shocked as hell to find out this about me, but I am a huge fan of classical and opera music. I find it to be some of the most stimulating, powerful music out there. My favorite singer on earth, and I mean by a longshot here, is Sarah Brightman. Ever since I first heard her sing on the original London cast of the Phantom of the Opera, I swore that someday, I would see her perform... and last night, my dream came true.

I went to the Saddledome alone, just me and my single ticket, to see the lovely Ms. Brightman perform for 2 hours, with a 20 minute intermission in between sets. For those who have seen her live or have seen her videos, you know that it's not just a concert with a woman in front of a mic singing - Sarah Brightman puts on an absolute SPECTACLE live. This concert was no different - the stage effects and additional dancers that she had performing was truly a work of art. She's not strictly operatic vocals either, but no matter what she sings, she does it with a spine-chilling voice. Her renditions of "Who wants to live forever" (Queen) and "Dust in the Wind" (Kansas) were incredible. She even did "Wishing you were somehow here again" from Phantom.

It was the most incredible concert I've ever been to in my life. Best part is, I was like 30 feet from the side of the stage!!! It was an awesome seat, and totally worth the $97 it's costing me. The concert was everything I dreamed of and more. Just thought I'd share my buzz. :)

Was anyone else at the Saddledome last night? Or did anyone else catch her on her tour? Will you be?

My Grandparents were Opera singers who did lots of theater when they could for many years in California. To this day my Grandmother still "warms up her voice" in the morning. Although my music taste is generally rock and what not, Opera can be definitly an amazing thing to see live and I will always have a little fan in me :)

I have seen quite a few operas and singers (even know a few personally), and have everything that Brightman has ever recorded, but unfortunately, a conflicting schedule (and the $300 it would have cost my daughter and I to go), kept me from her concert last night.

Glad you enjoyed the concert, $97 is a lot of money for a ticket.

Actually Ryan, the looks I was getting from some of the fans was QUITE entertaining. The people I was sitting beside didn't know what to think. :) A couple of girls gave me some "approving" raised eyebrows though, hehehe.

Yeah, $97 seems like a lot of dough, but I'd pay twice that to see the concert again. It was very moving.

Cool. :) I've probably spent over $500 and driven for almost 60 hours to see Elvis Costello 4 times in the past year and a half (Minneapolis X2, EDM and Cgy). Met him 3 times. ;)

Sarah Brightman interests me. I haven't heard a ton of her work but I'd be curious to hear it. The only thing I've heard of hers for sure is her duet with Andrea Bocelli (sp?), Time To Say Good-Bye. Nice song.... :)

I'm picky with opera. For some reason the high notes the female singers are known for give me a headache, my eyes even water and my ears ring for ages. To play it safe, I stick to male singers only, like Pavarotti. I'll have to see if I react to Sarah Brightman the usual way.

Classical music is great, love most of it. (It's only a coincidence that I married a guy named Richard Wagner, honest :)

Glad to hear you enjoyed the concert, now i'm really i'm upset i didn't go when she was here on the 22nd of feb. i just didn't have anyone to go with, should have just went by myself...i missed her last time as well...grrr. next time for sure! hopefully next year even if i have to go alone...

Hi Invictus....a slight deviation from your love of Sarah Brightman (I saw her perform "Phantom" many moons ago).
In my youth in London, England I worked in the same office as Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Tim Rice (they were learning the show biz routine). They were such "wimpy" guys in those days and it's hard to imagine them writing the most incredible music as in Phantom. We often had lunch together and never was there any indication of music in their conservations!
I shall now play Phantom from start to finish.....

Right on David or Andrea (You gotta sign your name, guys, hehehe). That is so cool. I can believe that they were whimps - they are artists. :) Now of course, they are godlike beings as far as I'm concerned. Nonetheless, seeing Sarah as Christine Daae would have probably given me a heart attack. Though I will always secretly hope that she gets back into that role. I WILL go all the way to London just to see that, especially if Michael Crawford also gets back into it as the Phantom. He is the ONLY Phantom in my opinion.

Yeah, i think i would pay that to see it (or Enya) also. sometimes we get stuck on a voice that we just can't put away. Right now i'm so much into OLEANDER, the singer has an amazing voice. I think i would pay no matter what to check a concert as well.

Hi Invictus...it's me, Andrea that has the love affair with "Phantom" I have played the CD at least 3 times through the last 24 hours. Yes, I saw Michael Crawford in the original production years back too. It's great when I lived in London, got to see so many great concerts. You don't hear much of Andrew Lloyd Webber these days, but I know Tim Rice joined up with Elton John and wrote quite a few pieces ( can't remeber the names of any at this point)!
Anyways thanks for the pic.!!! This is quite the deviation from our favourite hobby eh?!!

Andrea - Yes, this is quite a deviation, but it's a passion I've had just as long. :) Yes, Tim Rice joined up with Elton for all of his Disney stuff, I know that for sure... (Lion King, etc). Andrew Lloyd has pretty much faded into the background though, you're right. Maybe he accomplished everything he set out to do. Oddly enough, Phantom is the only one of his musicals I've ever seen... I haven't even seen Cats yet, and that plays in Calgary almost every year! lol
