Hey all,

Im 22 days from turning 14. Does anyone know of any jobs that I could get now or in 22 days? I live in Edmonton. Besides my starting to breed lots of rodents(hundreds), I really want a job so my parents dont have to pay for all my herp stuff. Thanks.

There is absolutely nothing shameful in getting your start at McDonalds or some other fast food chain. Money is money, and you have to start somewhere.

I agree Invictus. I worked at McDonalds.. I left when I had a review and they said I treated it like a job and not a career though.. I was like, yes I need money but no I don't want to work here all my life.. Now I work in imports :)

Well I know that the legal age for employment is 16 in Ontario... I am fairly certain it is a nationwide law. Might be why he is asking if we know of any ways around it, or other ways to work it out?

If you live on the out-skirts (sp?) of your town/city try getting a job with a farmer, they don't care how young you are, so long as you can do the work. I prefer farmers though, good people. If you don't live close to the farmers, try a greenhouse/nursery. They also hire younger people. Might not be in the heart of the city, but might be one pretty close. Wal-mart also hires students. Anyways, best of luck Chris.

If you want to work for yourself instead of someone else, ask one of your folks to help you get set up with Ebay and Paypal. Check the auctions for collectibles and see what other peoples junk is worth, then check out local flea markets on the weekend. If you play your cards right you can make a few bucks here and there :)

Linds - Labor laws are strictly provincial. It's 14 in Alberta.

My first job was actually telemarketing for the Calgary Herald if you can believe it. :) I was one of their top salespeople, and I stuck with that job for 14 months.

Sweet! But i wouldn't do that cause i hate it when i get calls during supper(minimum 1 a night between 5-9). I have to get up, answer the phone, listen to someone pronouce my dads or moms last name wrong(always, i have only heard 1 person in 4 years pronounce it right), then give the phone to them, sit down again, and listen to this person blabber, then my parents say thanks but no and bye and hang up. It gets really annoying. My mom sometimes gets 2 calls a night. LOL. Sorry for my blabbering, and sorry if i offended any tellemarkerters out there;), its just kinda annoying im sure you know.

Chris

BTW. Thanks for the age invictus, I never got a straight answer out of anyone. Maybe I will try to get hired at the zoo in Edmonton. Man i live soooo close, like about 800m down the hill and im at the zoo. HAHA. I already did some volunteering there. Its like a work camp. Does anyone have a guess if the zoo would hire me to shovel poop or clean cages? LOL. I dont mind it i work at my uncles goat farm sometimes. 70 goats = alot of crap. LOL. and food use.

I'm not sure if the 14 YO thing is across the board for all jobs in AB? I had a paper route when I was 11 or 12 YO mind you that was the late 70's. YA I'm a Rasin! LOL There is also landscaping Co.s etc. & the basics such as raking leaves, shovelling snow, mowing/weeding lawns, cleaning gutters & so forth. These are the better jobs anyhow because you can work them for CASH & not pay taxes on your wages. Cut out the damn Govt. middle man, heh heh Mark
