Hi, well i may have made a bad move here but i ran into this guy who was trying too get rid of a older male savana monitor, the guy said his friends gave it too him about 8 months ago with a bad case of mouth rot and hes been treating it, but dosnt want the thing, so i agreed too take it and do what i could for it, when i got it home cage and all i took a look over him ies im much worse shape then i thought, and i need any and all advice on how too help him, he has some mouth rot , which the guy was treating with iodine,? and said that it has been refusing food the last month, which is bad for a sav from what i hear, on top of that on his underside around the anus , is a mess seems too be blistered severly, and was very dirty, he also had some spots of retained shed, very little, so i soaked him, for about half an hour, too try and clean him off, she seems thirsty too, took a nice long drink, hes cleaned off, still has blisters, i dont know exactly how too deal with that, ok thats the story and all i know about the poor thing, now heres the questions,
1) how do i deal with the blisters,
2) how do i deal with the mouth rot,
3) whats the normal life span of one of these, just wondering not important but good too know,
and lastly,
4) any suggestions on how too get the guy eating,

please reply as soon as possible, ive done very well at keeping all my snakes and lizards and frogs very healthy too avoid these situations , but i hate too see an animal suffer because its unwanted so i took him in, thanks,
Devon

wow, sounds horribbbble...what i cna think of to do asap is get him to a vet because he might have worms or anything, and i keep him away from any other animals you might own as to not transfer anything to another. I dont know if it was such a good idea to take it, but i really hope he makes it and good luck treating it..i hope you realize you might need to spend a nice amount of money if he has anythign that a vet needs to see

Do you already know all the requirments for your enclosure? Like is the heat right, hides all that stuff?

Hey ya i know most of the requirments, just debating a substrate, the guy just had him with no substrate on the pyl wood floor, i like too use peat moss for my larger snakes, soaked then packed it drys too a nice solid 1/2 inch layer that absorbes ANY smell, i love the stuff, i had it in with my geckos, but was worried they would eay too much of it attacking crickets, so took it out, im wondering if that will work for him ,( not packed, his claws will just rip it apart) but just a nice 3 inches on peat moss, any body know if thatll work ??
thanks,
Devon
P.s> i didnt realize the severness of his ilnesses when i agreed too take him in, and as for spreading , can anything spread from a monitor too a snake ?? most of my collection is boas and pythons, ?? , eithr way there seprate, but just wondering,

until you get his health in order i would avoid any loose substrate for your sav. just use news paper as it is easy to change regularily and is inexpensive. the blistering could be from the bare wood substrate and probably dirty conditions it was kept on. i would suggest keeping it warm and dry and definately worth a vet trip if you really want to help it out. good luck

Yeah I would deffinately say loose sunstreates are a no no for now. Keep soaking him in water and use a wet Q Tip to clean his anus. Try putting polysporin on the blisters.

Jeff (sorry if I repeated what others above said, I didnt not have time to read their replys)

Hi, i took him too a vet this morning, it was the earilest appointment i could make, she said hes in hoirrible conditon , lol, i knew that thats why i was there, i am now going too continue washing his sores with Bridine, and i got him a shot of baytril, and some fluids, he is VERY dehydrated , which i assumed but forgot too mention eariler, im soaking him a few times a day he drinks alot while in there, and keeping a huge bowl of water fress in his cage replaed a few times daily and bringin him too it each time too encourage his drinking, i managed too get him too eat one slice of boiles egg, but dont expect him too eat much while hes this dehydrated, im going tooremove the peat moss, and most likly use paper towel for a while. i dont really have a tone of money too spend on him, i feel badly, but he was clkearly being abused bye his previous owner, or at least neglected so even the little i can do for him gives him a chance, , oh and yes my guess he was bilnd was correct, he has cataracts, easy too see, sorry these are so long, any advive on any of his problems would still be great , the more i try the better his chances, thanks,
Devon

Keep your eye on this little (girl/guy?) monitor. remove all uneaten food. Keep up the great work!!:D
