View Full Version : pueblan breeding questions!
I have a few questions on breeding pueblan milk snakes.
First off this will be my first breeding project along with a pair of corns i plan to buy. I have one year exp with snakes but no exp with breeding.
Im going to be buying a 6tub rack system from boaphile and was going to house it with 1.1 corns and 2.2 pueblan milks. My first questions is would you recomend buying two of the same color phase for breeding or buying something like:
1 oreo
1 orange
1 apricot
1 albino
I would still want them as pets just as much for breeding so thats why i wanted to get different colors so each one would be different.
Any tips, breeding or carehseet pages would be nice.

It really depends. Are you going to be keeping all the little ones? While it is always interesting to see "what pops out" when you experiment, be prepared to possibly have some that are less than perfect in pattern/color. These may or may not sell easily and you may end up with a lot of mouths to feed.
When I breed my normal male to my apricot female, I get all apricot babies. Baby pueblan milks are usually nice and bright too. Another thing- the albino gene was most likely a result of a cross with a nelsoni or a hybrid cross with a ruthveni -and some people are not fond of the cross bred stuff. Just make sure you know what you have and represent it honestly. Breeding the orange back into the oreo may get you some 'halloween" colors down the road.
All that said, have fun with the different colors and who knows? You may come up with something "new".

Thanks for the reply.
I know if i were to breed two of the same color phases i could probably sell them better as they would not be crosses which some people dont care for. I am planing on keeping one or two from each clutch and if i cant sell them i can defentily find someone to give them to.
I go to my local expo's and have alot of friends in my area that keep and breed many snakes so this shouldnt be a problem. I think this would be a great start for me considering the care of pueblans is pretty easy and with the bright colors of them it shouldnt be hard to sell.
Thanks again for your post and again any tips, or breeding pages i should checkout let me know!

Just a note for you; I think Mark was referring to the albino pueblans being crosses, not the different color phases (oreo, orange and apricot).

Crossing the color phases means nothing. Same exact snake except for a couple genes. It's the crossing of different sub-species and species that is frowned upon by some.
:)
Good luck with whatever you choose to do. I’m sure you'll have a blast! :D

Yup, many of the color phases of campbelli, don't breed true anyway. I've had nearly black and white babies(now called Oreos) from adults with perfectly normal triads, then grown them up to get normal babies with all colors. Also the sockheads don't breed true either.
Orange Pueblans are just Apricots with a few more generations of selective breeding.
That apricot tendancy is a weird trait. I'm not sure if its co-dominant or what buy like Mark said, all you need is one, to produce offspring that will carry the apriciot/orange trait, but I usually get about 50/50 when using an apricot males, so I guess it varies
I'd probably avoid any so-called albinos, because there simply aren't any albino campbelli.
Anything marketed as such is a man made mix(intergrade) with ruthveni or nelsoni.
I think it's cool to get several color phases in one clutch.. I'd recommend getting one nice apricot/orange and one or two good hi contrast normal phase perhaps with the sock head trait...That should make for some fun babies, but to each his own...
Here's a couple from the same clutch that I produced a couple years back

Hehe i ment if i breed a oreo with a apricot would i get some with mixed colors? If so thats what i ment by people not being interested because most people would much rather have a solid color as oposed to tri-colored snakes but who knows...
I i breed a apricot to a oreo would half of them be oero and some apricot or would they be mixed colors. Or all oreo and or all apricot? Remeber im new to this so i dont know much about how breeding different color phases works.
