I also have the Canon A80 and macro shots does take practice. You usually cant use the flash, so make sure the lighting is good for whatever your trying to shoot. Make sure your hands are very steady when taking the pic. Usually I try and lean the camera up against something. If your trying to get as close as possible even the slightest amount of shaking will produce a bad pic. Also, when you hit the mf button for macro, hit it twice and you will get the little magnifier in the middle of the screen. YOu can use that to see if your picture is clear on the lcd. I hope this helps!

On the contrary: I used to have the problem of wash out from the flash being too close to the subject also; to rectify this you can usually just set it to macro and utilize the telephoto zoom. The flash disperses a little and less of the light makes it back through the lens before the "shutter" "closes", thus no more wash out plus you get the benefits of using your flash (greater detail and crisper lines). Also, with the A80 you can control the flash output and duration with the manual feature.

Yup. This is exactly what I do with my A80. When you get to close to the subject your shooting, the flash takes over. Step back and use the zoom. Works great.

Also, by a cheap tripod. The slower shutter speed will kill your pics if you're going hand held.

I'm also trying to figure out some of the macro quarks on my new A70. Thanks for the tips, guys. :)
