wow, Tim, you're in Winnipeg! How's life in the 'peg? I grew up there! In fact, I was in winterpeg in september.
So flat that when your husky runs away from home you can see him running away for three days.
Two seasons, winter and construction.
11 months of winter and one month of bad skating.
Sorry, had to do that. Where in Winnipeg are you?

:D Yeah.... I know, trust me. But our 3 months of summer are pretty awesome (minus the, ummm mosquitoes). :)
I'm in Windsor Park, right by St. Boniface. You're not missing much. Same old 'Peg. It must be nice living down under. Did you move there for work?

how are they compared to water monitors? are they expensive?

In Montreal they'd be more expensive than water monitors, yes.
Hey Tim, my parents used to own a store in St Boniface, on St Marys Road, so I know it quite well.
Mosquitos are the official provincial bird, aren't they? I keep telling people here that they don't know what a bad mosquito problem is until the spend time in central Canada.
I originally came to Australia to do research on crocodiles a very long time ago. As of last year, I've lived here longer than I did in Winnipeg.

how is there attitude compared to a water monitor?

the maximum size for V varius is around 2 metres for males, females are much smaller.
I've never kept water monitors so I can't compare them, but the male lace monitors I have are really nice animals. Lots of character, very bold, smart and curious. The females also have lots of character and are smart and curious, but less tolerant of interactions with me. They don't bite, just give me dirty looks if I try to handle them.
All of them have wicked feeding responses, though, so I have to wash my hands very carefully before handling them and can't make any sudden moves into their enclosure with my hands.

Wow! What a lovely pair! If you offer me at least $10,000 CA, I may just wave my fingers in there. :D
