Greetings,
Well I caught my Widow in the act of constructing an egg sac so I brought out the digital video camera and compressed the two hour process into two minutes of video. I am likely not too far off in believing this may be the only footage of a Black Widow constructing an egg sac (when you take into account how small the probability of people keeping fertilised Widows in captivity, coupled with the freak occurence that she started construction while I was watching her and I just happened to have my camera and tripod handy).
Anyway, click the link and it should stream for you, and turn up the volume (it has a soundtrack): Egg Sac (http://home.cogeco.ca/~rbolton1/Egg%20Sac%20Final.mpg)
Ryan
P.S. You'll notice that she lost a tiny bit of her eggs, as such I am letting this egg sac hatch out because there should only be about 50 eggs in there.
Edit: if it won't stream, go here (http://home.cogeco.ca/~rbolton1/) and save the video to your hard drive..... enjoy!

Thats awesome! I actually thought the music went quite well with what was going on. You're probably right, I don't think there are a lot of widow egg sac videos out there. Very well done!

Oh yea, forgot to ask... I've heard that male widows look a lot different than female widows. I always figured the females were large and black, and the males were small and brownish, and looked almost nothing like the females. Is this true?

I know eh? I figured there's no real precedence when it comes to music-to-construct-an-egg-sac-by so I figured the selection was very fitting for the motions she goes through while building the sac!

Hi Tammy,
Black Widows are extremely sexually dimorphic. Males are almost unrecognizable to most people (as they do not exhibit the typical image one conjures up when they think of a Black Widow). Males are harmless, they have a much shorter life span, are a fraction of the female's size and their sole purpose is to mate (they don't really eat at all after maturation). Here (http://www.biosurvey.ou.edu/okwild/misc/bwmale.html) is a picture of a male (Latrodectus mactans).

damn man VERY cool. I got vids of mine but i can only do 30 seconds at a time..so they were scraped. Thats pretty damn cool, best vid ive seen of it ever. I cant beleive how fat she stayed too, some seem to be almost flat after laying.

dont suppose there is any way of seeing the 2 hour by any chance? yes my life is that boring....

Amazing!!

THANKS!

And I don't have sound on my computer, uhhh, I guess I should be happy?
I too, was very surprised to see she didn't lose much mass after constructing such a huge ball! Oh, now I will dream of seeing a spider do this in my care...
Also too, the scenery was terrific, and the twigs arched perfectly for a nice picture.
Do you have a picture of where this spider lives? Do you mind? It looks like a nice setup.

Great job Ryan. Well lit and shot, I liked how you edited it together and what a great choice of music to go along with it. Did you happen to shoot any video this summer while herping?

Thanks everyone for the kind words. I am glad most of you liked the musical score, it took me a while to determine what went best (and I thought it looked like she was dancing to that song too, especially in one of the last clips when you see just her profile putting the final touches on the sac).

Stewart,
I have a few clips from field herping, I will try to post a rather unexciting one of a Northern (intergrade?) Copperhead in Illinois in the field herping forum later on (complete with my own dorky narration).....

Matt,
Well, it's official. I am heading down to Kentucky in August and I think Kristen wants to send me somewhere out West first (she was sketchy on the details). I think I am going to see how far I can get with the US Embassy in Ottawa but it's good to know that if all else fails I can use the company you mentioned....

Cheers all,
R

AWOOO......
I am glad there are othere people who as twisted I am that they enjoy the song "Whoo-hoo" by the 5678's..... that band is such a nightmare.. I LOVE it. Those of you that liked the song sould hunt for some music by a band called Melt Banana on Kazaa or Winmx. Their best songs are "Free the bee" and Iguana in Trouble." Pure musical chaos. For Kill Bill fans, that song in this Black widow video should be familiar. That song was unbelievable, and its accompaniment to the video was flawless. Thanks for the great video, and the laughs.
