I came across this website that has a lot of interesting info so I thought I would pass it on. Here it is...

Boa Constrictor Herpetoculture (http://home.att.net/~crinaustin/BoaGeneral.htm)

Ok, second line: "...(imperator's have a nasty reputation)..."

They do? How come I haven't heard that from anyone else? LOL... Hmmm.... I haven't read the rest yet. :)

"Many people use newspaper, cedar shavings, Astro-Turf, dirt, sand, etc. in the bottom of the cage: I recommend pine shavings."

I think this care sheet blows.

I agree, there is a lot of stuff in there that I don't totally agree with that is outdated, but there is also some good info there as well.

Even if you don't necessarily agree with some of that stuff, it seems to be fairly well researched and references are provided for many of the claims made (the BCI's are aggressive part was not backed up with a footnote I noticed). Also don't forget that most of us get by on the advice and say-so of other keepers and that this information is often subjective (like the substrate issue) and we may not always "know" as much as we think we do about these mysterious creatures.

Personally, from what I read, I thought it was a pretty good care sheet (although it was more of an article than it was your typical care sheet) but I'm not about to start keeping my boa at temperatures below 80F, not because I believe that we all know better necessarily, it just makes me feel better to know there is enough heat to keep him digesting. That part may or not be accurate, I'm sure it isn't popular these days, but that doesn't mean there isn't a lot of other info there that could be useful.

in short....i think that caresheet was no good...if the guy knows about snakes he has a hard time expressing his knowledge. If I knew nothing about boa constrictors that sheet would 1) probably turn me away from getting one but if not than...2)cause me to make errors 3)cause me to make more errors.

Cedar shavings?:dumb: You shouldn't use cedar for any pets.

Yup, I've seen that one a few years back. I'm going to have to agree with everything Yve said, there were far too many unsafe recommendations and false information in that care sheet... a perfect example of why caution needs to be excercsied when reading care sheets

some of the basic science stuff seems good, but basically seems like much of M. Kaplan's(sp?) stuff.
