What are all the monitors?

Hey everyone!

Im just very into the monitors and it seems i learn about another species every day so im just wondering if i could get a pic and brief description of every existing monitor that can be legally owned in canada. If no pic then a link to one would be great! And as stated, a brief description. Ie: Species(english, latin), average size, food, temps, cages sizes, habitat type. Thanks.

Look at Reptilia magazine, issue #19 I believe - it has a pic of the most frequently seen/offered monitors....your question is far to broad and complex to answer even if time permitted!

hey Steeve,

Are you sure it's southern? It looks like a north Queensland animal to me. The southern ones are more banded than spotty and tend to have yellow throats with thin black lines. All highly variable, of course, but there does seem to be a trend.

haha.. Steeve, no problem, you aren't a dork. There aren't really any published papers (that I know of) on lace monitor locality variation, it's mostly anecdotal 'evidence'.

The parcel wasn’t from you Mark, it was full of photos of different locality lace monitors, it was sent to be by a gentlemen who had much much more passion for this specie then I did. You know how it is, you can read all there is written on a particular species, if it doesn’t interest you, it goes thru thin air. To me lace are my new garbage can, like ornatus use to be! tossing them whatever’s left over, maybe as ornatus did, they will grow on me with time, and ill learn to fully appreciate them. For now I look at them, and all I see is an over glorified monitor that needs to win my hart in other ways then its price tag, many other monitors did before them. They have a long way to go!!

Steeve, you haven't mentioned whether or not your other lace monitor is a male. I wouldn't judge the species by two individuals, even if you do have one of each gender.

Where I live lace monitors are common captives, but I think they are underglorified. They are smart and extremely curious, have great 'personalities', are well preportioned and are spectacularly coloured. If I only had my females, I'd probably be less inclined to think they had great personalities, just 'quirky'. I do agree with you, though, that they are very food focused to the point of having dangerous feeding responses when hungry.

Yes I also have males, but only this female is acting goofy, most peoples who’d love her for her excessive personality, she’s not aggressive one bit, however she jumps at the door for food or on the glass every time I pass by, she’s the funniest monitor I ever kept, she’s also the most challenging, cage cleaning and water changes becomes a strategic war with her, I just don’t have the time this princess demands. I feel she who’d be better with someone who who’d give her more attention.
