Also, how long does it take for this species to mature?

A veiled will grow very fast in about a year its 95% grown, and a adult will eat at least 5 or more crix a day probably more. and as juvies they will eat alot more.

Hey there,

As babies, veilds eat a lot. Anywhere from between 10-20 a day, depending on the individual. Its better to offer a few at a time, and remove any that remain uneaten at the end of the day. As adults, they eat as much as they want. Some will eat a few every other day, while some will eat ten a day. Again, it depends on the individual. I personally like to let mine eat as much as they want, and once they reach adults, moderate it on how fat they are :)

To reach full maturity, it take between ten and twelve months.

When I first got Chester he was eating about 15 per day. He is slowing down now............sometimes 10 a day, sometimes he skips days.............

CC,

There is no such thing as too many. If you dont want to meet the feeding requirements than a chameleon isnt for you.

I had one baby eating at least 30 pinheads a day. This didn't last too long, but that sure is a lot of crickets! If you have a baby thats only eating 10 crickets, consider yourself lucky! As dank7OO said already, adults vary in how much they eat, and usually on a day to day basis range from 5-10 daily

I also let mine eat as much as they want, they moderate their weight and adjust feedings according, for males that is! For females, they are best off with fixed diets.

big females = big clutches
big clutches = shortened lifespan :(

Wow, thanks all, very informative. I guess if I end up convincing my parents to let me get one of these then I will need to buy more crix. Right now I have a room of inverts and a 3 dozen crix lasts me like 2-3 weeks.

Yeah. For my three right now, I go through about 1000 a month.

You wouldn't believe how many crix my baby beardies are devouring. I was astonished when my first batch of 1000 crix was gone. Before them i was buying about 4 dozen crix a week for 2 leos and a pictus. The beardies were definately an eye opener in that department. Now i have a chameleon coming next month, and of course my beardies will be eating too large of crickets for the cham by then.... I think from here on out i have to go with the vegetarians.... or maybe smaller snakes. 2 med rats a month doesn't sound so bad.

Geoff

p.s: what size of crix would you start a 2"svl male Nosy Be on? (in fraction of inches please)

Veiled Chams as babies can it a lot, but they then slow down as they get older. You should also try mixing up their diet, with mealworms, a silkworm once awhile, and when they get to full size they can even take a pinky

Id have to agree with about 10 crix a day. You dont want too put too many in there and stress the little guy out. KILOS; id go with 1/4 inch crickets to start that little guy off.

Mealworms should be fed scarcely to babies. They have a high level of chitin and are hard for young chameleons to digest. Also pinkies should be fed as a treat only.

also if you want to get them to eat mealies or silk worms make sure they start young, really young or else they wont eat it when they grow up

Where did you hear this from? From my experience, this is not true.

the only thing i notice when it comes to silks is that on the first bit they are kinda suprised and dont always take it but when u continue feeding they love them... As for mealies i do notice that some chams love them more then others...

My panthers were around 4 years old before I got the first silkworms which they ate like candy. Same with roaches - they were around 2 before they saw the first ones. I've never had trouble introducing new foods to 'older' panthers nor jacksons. Maybe the pickiness is more the exception than the rule.
