1. Has a clam temperment right away.
2. Stays under 5'
3. Has a strong feeding responce and does not need a special diet. Will eat mice or rats and not go off food causing un-do stress to it's owner.
4. Easy to cage. Something that can live in a simple glass tank with a locking lid.
5. Has moderate temp and humidity requirments. Not something that will die of dehydration or get scale rot if the hymidity is off a bit in either direction. Something that won't get an RI if the heat pad is left off for a week by accident.
6. Looks very nice. Has nice bright attractive colours.
7. Does not cost an arm and a leg.
Name one or two snakes that you can think of that has all of these characteristics.
Thanks,
Trevor

Cornsnakes and Sinaloan Milksnakes. :)

Why do you ask?

Well I started by askeing the members to list the characteristics that they felt made a snake a good first snake. The obove post is a list of the most frequently menthioned characteristics. Next I'll ask the members to list snakes that they feel have all of the above characteristics. In a few days when a list of snakes is ready I'll post a poll asking the members to chose www.ssnakess.com's members choice for best first snake. Kinda like a peoples choice award for best first snake. Then maybe we can get it posted some where. Something like, " The most populare first snake voted for by the members is..........".
Thanks,
Trevor

Well the first species that came to my mind after reading your list is Hog Island Boas. Not sure if people would recommend this species as a "first snake" but I love mine. He is very calm tempered except when I feed him, then he strikes at anything that moves for approx. 30 mins...lol Other than that they are great snakes and not high maintenance IMO.

Corns, milks, certain kings and rats, hognose snakes, spotted and childrens pythons, african house snakes, garter and ribbon snakes, rubber and rosy boas. Mostly colubrids. I would say normal balls as well, but some aren't very good feeders. Hope this helps :)

A Rosy boa came to mind as I was reading down the list. Although corns and kings are notorious for great first timers, so I can't not say those. :)

Oh, also, sorry to post off topic, but Invictus, is that YOU in your avatar? That's some wicked makeup if it is, lol. Just thought I'd throw that out there, it was driving me crazy with curiousity, lol. ;)

No that's not him, that's what he did to the last guy that went off topic in one of my threads!

Corns, spotted pythons, thayeri kings, and I was gonna say black milk but they get bigger than 5'. :)

I think Ball pythons are hardy, interesting, attractive, good eaters, and are a manageable size. I think that, with research, they'd make good first snakes.

Hahaha... no, that's Dani Filth, the lead singer of Cradle of Filth. Funny thing is, I'll probably change my avatar in a couple of weeks and I'll have to edit this post, hehehehe

Trevor - You gonna kill me for going off topic too?

African House Snakes! Any of the common North American Rat Snakes; Black Rat, Grey Rat, Yellow Rat, Corn Snakes, (though they may be a little jumpy as hatchlings). Mexican Black Kingsnakes are easy keepers also. Captive bred Garters if you don't mind switching them to mice can make good pets as well.

Thayeri kings... still my calmest and sweetest little guy, he's the one I let people see/hold first when they are afraid of snakes. No one is intimidated by this small, deliberate, gentle guy. :)

I would have to say, from personal experience, spotted pythons or corns. Or both ;)

ATB's are easy to keep (fairly), but by far the easiest snake to keep in my opinion is the BP. The morphs do cost an arm and a leg, but you could get lucky by breeding two normals together and getting a little something special. If this were the case, all of your mentioned criteria is met.

Ball Pythons. They may go off feeding for a period of time, but that's normal.
