View Full Version : re sick red ear
the baby red ear i have that had the badly swollen eyes is doing much better. hes eating and is more active and his eyes are almost always open. i made a big mistake though... after his eyes first started opening i started using less meds to once a day or so and they started staying closed again. so i started using more, i'm back to once a day again, 2 drops in each eye and the eyes are usually open. when should i stop using the meds?

I'm so not an expert so take this with a grain of salt.
Could the eye problem keep coming back because the conditions that caused it in the first place haven't changed? What was the problem? Too cold? That's my only thought. I'd keep using the meds for as long as your vet or whomever instructed but make sure the situation that's irritating the little peepers is corrected.
Again, i'm a newb. Just trying to go on some basic experience and logic and learn a little in the process.

i have no idea how he got sick, my mom got 2 babies, same size, they were both fine for a while. then one stoped eating and kinda stopd doing everything, i went to her house to get it and its eyes were swollen and closed and she said it was the first day they were closed. i just got the meds at petsmart and it sais on there how many drops to put in and stuff and if the eyes dont open in a week take the turtle to a vet. but they did open after a week and now there always open. the other turtle is fine though, its alot bigger because it never stoped eating and seems fine. i'm not going to put them back together but when they are big and my red belly is big i plan on puting them all together
i think i will put drops in for a few more days and stop and see what happens
heres a pic i took of him today. this was the first time i took him out of the water and let him crawl around, he didn't want to stop either =)

I'd continue with the drops and get to the source of the problem too cold of water can cause eye problems over time. The biggest cause, in my opinion, is dirty water. Be sure there are no contaminates and the subsrtae is clean. Also good filteration is a must. When buying filters for a turtle tank the rule of thumb is buy one for double the size of your tank. Size recomendations on the filter box are for FISH aquariums not turtles. So you got a 50 gallon tank, buy a filter for a 70 or 100 gallon. Turtles are much more dirty than fish.
for now hes in one of those little turtle lagoon kidney shaped things sence he still doesn't move too much and it was better when he couldn't see, easier to find the ramp to get out of the water and bask. i keep it as clean as possible and the water is nice and warm. and i know about filters now, i had to go through alot of troubles with my red belly, kept going through crappy duetto filters and canister filters and stuff. but now he has a emperor 400 power filter which works wonderfuly =) and soon i will get the baby red ear in a bigger tank so he can move more

It sounds alot like what happened to my two Red Ears when I first got them a decade ago. If that's happening to them, there is something wrong with their environment.
