Silkworm question

When they say grate the new chow on top of the worms are they supposed to all come up and then you take the dried up chow out?

There always seem to be a few straglers than stay on the old stuff. Is there any tips for getting these guys to all come up?

btw, I'm talking about newly hatched worms.
