Leaf tail gecko's.

Hi. I was talking to KaHane and he told me about these leaf tailed gecko's he has and I was looking into something for my 10 gallon tank. First off, where can I get some of these guys? Willt hey be at the Reptile Show on April 22nd does anybody know? And are they expensive? Thancks.

Well you deffinately can not use a 10 gallon tank for any types of Uroplatus. I'd say a 20 gal is minimum for all species and try for more if possible. For price it really depends, there are 10+ kept species and the lowest I have ever seen any is U. Henkeli males for $100, and females are usually about 20-30 more.

Uroplatus Henkeli is the most common type going around right now as well as the lowest costing too I think. Anyways look around on the net and figure out what ytype you like best. But none of them can live in a 10 gal.

Thanx., Well do you have any good suggestions for gecko's for a 10 gallon because that's all I have to work with. And I don't want house gecko's or anole's.

U. phantasticus and U. ebanaui "can" live in a 10gal, but they're considered to be a gecko more for advanced/meticulous keepers.
There are some good care sheets around and even some good posts here in the archives on these species, you should take a look.

I thought that them being aboreal needed a substantial amount of height for the cage? Well if you do schoose do get either of the two Sara listed then turn the tank on its side so its verticle. I think the animals would appreciate it much more.

Also if you are looking for something else that can go in a 10 gal you could get Odoura Monolis specie of Velvet gecko. Theya re very attractive and good to keep, They too run int he $100 range and can probably do well in a 10 gallon tank.

<i>U. phantasicus</i> and <i>U. ebanaui</i> are both ground/low level dwellers. They do quite well in long vivaria with plenty of leaf litter and moss with some branches. Both these species are very small, and could technically be housed in a 10 gal, but that sure doesn't leave much room for error. A 20 gal - long would be ideal for a pair of either species.

Keep in mind as well that these are high humidity animals and also don't tolerate high temps. This combination can be tricky to match and keep them healthy. Also, either of the two previously mentioned species are not frequently bred in captivity, but you would likely find imports if you looked in the right placees.

Thank you for the info. I agree 10 gallon is too small for most gecko's or animals period but it can be done. I am just looking for a neat gecko as I want to try them again. And hwat kidn fo lighting would be needed for that Velvet gecko you mentioned? Where they are they would get some sunlight, but it's through a window, then the glass. But is that enough or can they have flourescent lighting? And I'm not one for handling reptile's a whole lot because I know they can tolerate very little, but, how are these Velvet gecko's for handling? Are they very fast liek house gecko's or can they be tamed and do they bite a lot?

They are nocturnal so they require no UV lighting, but do need a heatlamp through the day. They are a little squirmy at first but with handling for maybe 15 mins a day for a week they completely calm down. They are a little nippy but it feels like absolutely nothing at all.

Auatralian velvet geckos (Oedura monilis) and Northern velvet geckos (Oedura castelnaui) are both good choices. The are small nocturnal geckos with fantasic colouration. I personally have never kept Oedura monilis but I do have a pair of Oedura castelnaui.

Satanics and eben's can live in a 10 gallon tank. But like Jon said, keep the temps low and the humidity high or you will end up with major problems. Hey you guys been looking for the Satanics? I had some advertised in the classifieds for weeks now!LOL:D Too bad they are all sold. I will be getting more soon:)
