I'm just curious to see how big other bloods are out there. My female is about 4ft and weighs around 25 lbs.

Mine is still really young, and I haven't measured her yet, but I'm guessing she's around 2 feet... I'll see if I can get a more accurate measurement.

Here's a female I produced in 1993. She's 7 feet long and weighs at least 36 pounds. She's one of those big dopey red blood pythons that is as tame as any ball python (but harder to lift).

Ah, those are the best kind!! I love big dopey bloods. Yours especially is a screamer... and 7 feet?!?!?!?! WOW. Good size. I'd expect it to be a lot more than 36 pounds at that length though, are you sure those measurements are accurate?

Great blood Joan!

if anything, i think your much more likely to see a 7 foot at 36 lbs then a 4 ft at 25 lbs...

this 4 year old female at 6 feet was only 25 lbs...
and all of my 4 footers were inbetween 10-15 lbs.

My guy is really little an like 22 inches....is there anyway to tell the colour they are gonna have when they are older. Joan's is completely red and Grants is a more muted colour...Both look incredibly cool. But can you tell when they are young ??

So Grant, when someone comes over to your place, they have to take their shoes off, but put a cap on?

Hi Ken – yes I’m definitely sure on those dimensions. As the photo below shows, it’s plenty easy to make a docile blood or two lie still for a measurement! That’s a 6 foot Vision cage behind them and the tape is extended out 2 feet on the side. The smaller one was 6 feet long and about 25 pounds then, so I agree with Grant on his size estimates. The 7 footer looks a bit on the chubby side, even though it’s an earlier photo than the one above.

My mistake, I thought they got MUCH heavier than that when they got to 6 or 7 feet. I mean, I have a 7' boa that weighs 12 pounds, but he is of course, nowhere near as thick as a blood. :)

Nonetheless Joan, you have amazing bloods.

Thank y’all for the kind words.

Grant – The cage liners are sold as 60 lb. basis weight indented kraft paper by shipping supply companies. Most sell big rolls, others offer cut sheets in limited sizes. I’ve used two online suppliers, Associated Bag Co. and Uline, both in the U.S. Even though the paper was described identically, the product from Uline was better I thought – more substantial. Along with 24” x 36” newsprint, I’ve standardized on 36” x 360’ rolls, as well as 24” x 36” cut sheets of this kraft paper. With a little judicious folding or by using multiple sheets, I can make these work for all my cages.

As far as “are they worth it”, it’s hard to answer. When you figure in shipping costs, they are quite pricey.
But they, along with unprinted newsprint, are a luxury I allow myself after years of black hands and water bowls due to the ink from regular newspaper. They absolutely will not hold up to lots of liquid – whether urates or from heavy water spraying of cages. You really need to add newsprint either underneath or on top to absorb the fluids that come with big boids. The kraft paper holds up best during the periods when the animals are off feed.

Anyway, I use some combination of unprinted newsprint and kraft for most of my non-burrowing species. I find that I keep on top of sanitation better the simpler the clean up process is.

I have a Sumatran red (yellow) blood that looks like Grants. She's 26"+-, and growing quite fast! 10" in 4 months.
Joan, that 7 footer is the most impressive Blood I've ever seen! What color! And size! What, and how often do you feed her?

lol Kara!

Joan,

thanks for the information. i too would like to no longer have black hands and no matter how hard you try to wash those white hide boxes... you can never get all of the ink out!
but if it doesn't absorb well. ... it has no use to me.
if i was keeping boa constrictors or snakes that defecated bi-monthly (or at least on a regular basis) rather then say a blood or timor python that can pass waste 4 days in a row...lol
