What's a good lizard that won't outgrow a 70-100 gallon tank.
Please no geckos, skinks, or chameleons. And can also be relatively easy to take care of?
Thanks

uromastyx or a beardie are good bets

with your restrictions, id go with a uro, but of course my first choice would be a blue tongued skink. the uromastyx would be my second choice.

I had both a beardy and uro and the same time...i ended up giving the beardy to a friend and buying another uro..personally uromastyx are muuuch better..more personality, imo, and more fun to watch because they're all curious..its really funny lol

Anyone ever heard of an armadillo lizard? And can you get them CB? Plus what the prices?
And a mountain horned dragon, anyone heard of them? Does anyone know where to get them?

Hey Mathaldo, did you ever think of a Jewelled lacerta? They are much alike a tegu, but usually stay a bit smaller. Their colors can be quite impressive.

You haven't really given us much information on what kind of lizard you want. Are you looking for a larger or smaller animal? Do you want a handleable lizard or a display lizard? I'm sure we could give you many more suggestions and help you out a little better if you gave us some more details.
I see that you are not interested in any geckos, skinks or chameleons. That rules out quite a few interesting animals that make good pets. I'm just curius as to why you don't want any of them.
Almost all mountain horned dragons (Acanthosaura species)are wild caught and do not usually fare well in captivity. I have heard that they get stressed easily, are high maintenance and do not make very good "pets".
Armadillo lizards (Cordylus cataphractus) are interesting lizards but they are quite skittish.
Heres a site with loads of info on them: http://www.chicagoherp.org/special/garyfogel/art_of_cordylid_lizards.htm
I personally recommend:
Bearded dragons (Pagona vitticeps)
Mali uromastyx (Uromastyx maliensis) or other species of uromastyx.
Yellow Ackie (Varanus acanthurus)
You could also go for a:
Asian (Chinese) water dragon (Physignathus cocincinus)
Australian water dragon (Physignathus lesueurii)
To find information on any of the above lizards (or other species), simply go to www.google.ca and type in the name of the species.

I am deeply surprised that no one has said this!
If you are getting a reptile of any sort just because "it's cool" then DON'T. Get one you geniunely like. Do a search on ALL the reptiles mentioned, not the ones mentioned the most.
If you get a reptile simply because it's "cool" then chances are good you will end up neglecting the reptile once it is "un cool" or once another reptile becomes "cool".
Do your research, and then decide what you like the most.

You are right about that. But there's another side of the coin there: "cool" is the number one reason why people get stuck on herpetology, so that makes it a needfull bad thing. How many people get into reptiles because it's cool and as they grow along with it, end up addicted to the hobby in a responsible way? I would say many, many... I did!
I remember when i knew nothing about herps, but i got my first iguana anyway because it was cool. Since then, i got monitors, boas, pythons and so on, and today i'm the one giving info and advise on reptiles to other guys just starting. Everytime a kid comes to me asking reptile stuff i know it's only out of "coolness" just like it was for me years ago, but i know that if they get into it, the "cool" factor will give into a responsible sense of achievement.
Without the "cool" factor, the hobby would be dead long ago...

That is true. I didn't get into it because it was "cool". And I know of many neglected herps because people DID get into it because it WAS cool at the time. But the actual work of the animal was to much.
I just said do a search on ALL the reptiles mentioned.....and pick one he truely likes. :)
I don't know of anyone working with CB Armadillo Lizards in Canada. Uromastyx would be a great choice, they are one of my favourite lizards, that's for sure. A Bearded Dragon would also do fine, I don't like them, but that's just my perference, many people find them quite enjoyable. Also as mentioned, Lacertas can also do well in a tank that size. Ackies and Giant Knight Anoles are a few more that come to mind...

I've been looking at ackies, but I thought the cage sizes needed to be bigger? I really like them, and am thinking of getting one, being one of the smaller monitors, but I need to save up.
One of my friends is looking to get a spiny tailed iguana, are they good? Are there any CB or just WC, and would they fit in that size of a tank?
Thanks for all the replies so far.

Hey matt. A spiny tailed Iguana would be a perfect lizard

U Should get a spiny tailed iguana, they are great lizards.
Ackies wouldnt thrive to well in an aquarium. Very hard to keep humidity levels up in order to keep suitable substrate (stuff that will burrow) keeping ackies on anything but something they can burrow in, you really miss out on their natural behaviour.
Mountain horned dragons are great! but as mentioned before they are wild caught. Avoid overhandling too early as they will surely become stressed. If you leave them be for about a month then begin very short handling sessions they usually do quite well, and look impressive!

The bigger issue with keeping Monitors in glass aquaria is that it is stressful for them. Imagine yourself sitting in your bedroom and this is your world. Not so bad, you have most of what you need in there and some one comes to throw you food once in a while..........now imagine that same exsistance in a glass room. It can be done, but it surely adds more variables to overcome/figure out.........I think monitors have enough of those issues without making things even more difficult ;)

Could they live in a reptarium? Or would that be too stressful?
Maybe an ackie could, other moniters deffinately not.
