Excluding rare accidents with people that don't wash their hands after handling rodents, are savannah monitors known to unexpectedly lash out and bite someone? Has anyone ever been bitten? More than once? Do they bite hard and hold on? Thank you to all who reply and give me web sites!!:D

ask the mouse or rat that he/she just finished off.. ;)
i'd imagine like all monitors they'd bite hard and just clamp on..
i've been bitten by one before.. but i was wearing gloves.. due to the fact the nails were extremely sharp and i didnt feel like getting my hands cut up..
it held on for a good few mins.. gloves were pretty thick so i didnt feel it as much..

Usually after awhile Savannahs calm down quite a bit. But babies do tend to lash their tales and bite alot. Ive been bitten a few times. Its not extremely painful (depending where you get bit) but they do like to hold on a bit. At least with my experience they have. Once and awhile if you get bit the best thing is not too pull away but just let him be because most of the time they will start to let go. Id suggest wearing gloves for awhile just to get the animal used to you and the daily happenings then after he/she calms down you should be able to handle her without gloves. Hope that helps a bit.

My savannah will, on occasion(normally 1 time per week at the most), lash out at me when i try to take him out. He will curl his body to the left or right(depending where my hand is) and try to smack me with his tail and bring his head there too but for some reason does not open his mouth. I just use a towel to pull him out when he does that but once he is out of the cage he is immediately in my hands. Hes a very good savannah and tamed down REALLY fast.

I know that they may hold on but as stated before, dont pull away, you'll just make it worse. Your skin will probably get torn. Gloves work if you want but i prefer bare hands or a towel temporaryly. I like to be able to feel what the animal is doing. I dont like wearing gloves(never actually have, even when dealing with things like iggys and tokays and all those guys that bite hard, snakes, i guess anything). They normally do tame down quite well. I only know of one specimen that is overly reactive and tries to bite anyone who touches it and thats like 1 out of 20 i know.
