latex paint? ok

is latex paint ok for a enclusure. it is for a beardie and im wondering if it is ok as it is safe for shildren. and beacuse it is dry no real chance of leaching.as long as teh bottom is pool enamel where they scratch. any comments?

Well latex is water based. Im not sure i would still want to eat it however! But from an off gas point of view i think its probably better then alkaline paints. Low gloss paints do not have the scratch resistance that the higher glosses due however. I used to sell paints and i know that for items such as cribs and play toys that require being painted for babies that they recommend latex incase the child chews on the toy...which most babies will. I can't guarantee anything...if anything at all, i would get the phone number off the can and call the mfg to ask...just to be safe.

I would suggest applying some sort of protective sealant over top of the the latex paint. If it is sealed effectively, it should be perfectly fine ;)

I cannot comment on using it on its own however.

The latex paint usd for concrete floors is safe and water proof. I just bought some for my boa cage.

one problem i've noticed with latex paint is that they can "disolve" in some fluids. I've accidently stripped paint down to the drywall with mr clean or other cleaners.

Yes but Lisa neither of those cleaners should ever be anywhere near your snakes. I'm sure you already know that but it never hurts to mention it anyway.

Maybe not, but think of the chemicals that are in urine... do you want your snake peeing on something that it could desolve?

good point. but i have a beardie. most of the urea comes out in a solid. and i guess urea is almost like ammonia which is in soem cleaners. just need enough substrate to absorb it before that becomes a problem.

Floor paint dosen't desolve. The latex paint intended for concreat floors is what I bought on the advice of a long time herper.
This is not the $14 a gallon wall stuff from Wal-Mart so I'm not worried.

Waterbased = water soluble. How can latex (waterbased) be waterproof? :confused:

I don't know lLinds but it's Latex paint used for concreat floors. It would not be sold for floors if it washed off during cleaning.
Maybe it's only water soluble while it wet so that brushes and rollers can be cleaned and then when it's cured it's not soluble anymore. It really would make much sense to paint a floor and then wash it off everytime you cleaned the floor.
The paint I bought is Pittsburgh Floor, Porch and Deck 100% Acrylic Enamel.

I've been a painter for 15 years , just make sure you use an enamel because it drys much harder than other paints. Also you should use a semi gloss for the cleaning end of it. Semi gloss is a little harder finish and it will last you longer in a cage that your cleaning on a regular bases. Any other question please email me and I'll help out how ever I can. John

I know a lady who was moving and her ten foot burm escaped from its room, yes room, while they were packing. The burm hid in one of the boxes which contained family heirloom silver, the snake peed and demolished the silver, totally ruined!
