View Full Version : troubles with him already
my new pacman wont eat! i dont think he has great vision though. he wont move when your going to pick him up but once you touch him he starts jumping away and when hes out i will move my fingers near him and his eyes and hes still untill i touch him, then he freaks and starts jumping away again. all i'v tried to feed him were crickets so far. what else can i try and why might be not be eating? (i'v had him for 6 days so far)

He probably just needs some settle-down time in order to become accustomed to his new environment & you as well.
When he starts to bite your fingers, he's ready to eat & crickets are just fine.
thanks, lol, is that true about biting me, there usually like that? i'll keep offering little bits of things and hopefully he'll eat soon, what are some other things i can feed him while he grows?
I feed mine crickets but he also loves kingworms and pinkie mice.

I am doubtful that it is an eye related problem. I say this because these frogs rely on their camoflage in the wild to remain hidden. So, perhaps he thinks he is unseen despite the fact that you are wiggling your fingers in front of him. When you touch him, I suspect he realizes that "the gig is up" and he needs to find a new "hiding spot." Keep in mind that Certophrys are "sit-and-wait" predators, and some of the shyer feeders in captivity will only eat what is crawling around right in front of them. This seems logical, because the bolder frogs who are more willing to chase down prey are more likely to be seen by predators and be eaten. However, on the flipside, extrermely shy feeders are likely to starve... I think that what I am getting at is that you may need to put him in something smaller for the moment, and in a more private place with less household traffic. A large deli cup should suffice. Put one cricket in with the frog, and put it somewhere that is less likely to be disturbed. Don't even look at the frog for a day. This may help both potential problems as
a) if too much space is the case, there is a far higher chance that the cricket will be in a comfortable range for the frog to lunge at.
b) If the frog is a shy eater, this privacy may remedy the problem.
Keep in mind, I don't claim to be an expert, these are just ideas. My knowledge of Certophrys in the wild is minimal... so take my advice for what it is.
And to get back to you about the filtered fridge water.. I would err on the side of caution and get some spring water or dechlorinator. If your water is chloraminated, a carbon filter on the fridge will not remove this.
Good luck
i will try puting the frog in a small containor to feed. does it need to be moist sence hes going to be in there all day? i actually think it would be better at night, he moves around alot more at night. and my water already doesnt have any chlorine at all. but i will start buying bottled water any ways.

Keep us posted.... best of luck
i got pumpkin on 1/1/04 and on 1/12 he finally ate. i put him in a little critter keeper with dirt and one cricket in the morning and was going to leave him be all day and see if he ate when i got home from school. but minutes after he was in the little cage i checked on him and the cricket was gone so i gave him one after the other, he ate about 5 medium sized crickets. i was wondering how many crickets he should eat when i feed him (hes about an inch and half long from nose to butt) and how often.

Glad to hear that your little guy finally ate. When my Ceratophrys was a juvi, I gave him 2 or 3 dusted crickets every day and now that he is full size, he eats 4 or 5 crickets twice weekly.
Good luck, and keep us informed as to how the little guy is doing.

He is soo cute :) :) :)
Glad that he ate for you, and I have to agree with everything in DoubleJ's post as well. I'd also like to add that I have had good success feeding small earthworms to very young horned frogs.
thanks every body, this has really helped, my frog went from not eating any thing to being a pig. its really fun watching him eat crickets, going to try some other things soon. if any one has any more suggestions just keep em' coming, they help. =)
