Field herping is generally a hobby for most. If your are looking at the career aspect, it is a small part of a scientific position, as with any field work... Herpetology, Biology, Ecology, etc. Definitely not an easy field to get in to.

Sorry I cannot be of more help... lol.. not my field and probably never will be :p

Unless you go to a country where you are paid to collect WC animals for exportation to other countries :/

In most cases I would not mention that you keep cative reptiles. Many of the people interviewing you will think that you may want to bring your study subject home with you. I would all together leave out the fact that you keep herps.

Apart from that I would get involved in numerous volunteer projects and make as many connections as you can. Then you will learn who is doing what and how you can get a job doing whatever it is that you want.

I think you'r best bet would be to get accepted in a grad program in herpetology. Once you've graduated you'd need to come up with a research project and get funding. Seems like most field herper jobs go to grad students. Cheap and eager.
