my baby blackthroat which I had for almost a month died this morning  . I don't know what the hell went wrong. I know I had the husbandry all correct. She had a basking spot of 130 degrees or so, and the cool end never got below 85. I misted her enclosure atleast three times a day, and she got a good hour soaking every week.

Last night when I got home, I noticed she was just laying around not doing much. I didn't bother her because I thought she was just chillin'. Anway, when I woke up this morning, she was barely moving. I called a vet who treats reptiles, and I was about to take her, and she was dead. I'm so freakin' mad. I noticed she didn't eat anything yesterday. I was feeding her gutloaded crickets, and the occasional ground turkey. I fed her a pinky for the first time on Wednesday. I'm just hoping I didn't get a bad pinky. Damn, damn, damn, I so pissed off.

Sorry for venting. I just don't know what could have happened. Maybe she had parasites? Could it been compaction? She was living on cypress much, and I don't know if should could have ingested mulch going after crickets. This sucks!!!

Ok, there is a difference between eating and how much it was EATING. anyone with a monitor will know what Iam talking about.

Eating 1-2 crickets every three days which is usually a common thing with newbies and monitors, isnt EATING. Usually lack of apetite or minimal feeding is due to PARASITES. Pardon me for not being direct enough.
Thanks.

PS, I'am sorry about your monitor.

I have a healthy little 12" savannah monitor and i agree with V.hb. Mine pigs out when he eats. Like he ate 5 silkworms in about 3 minutes and then he had already had a little lowfat dogfood earlier in the day. What a lil piggy! But he is not fat.

Anyways, maybe your monitor had parasites. It probably was not your fault and that is common with niles + savannahs, but i dont know about blackthroats. Sorry bout ur little one.

It could be parasites, dehydration, starvation, lack of immune system etc etc etc.
A healthy young hatchling will eat 50+ crickets a day (at 2-3 months old), if it never got below 85 f on the cool end you could have problems again. You offer a range of air temps from 70s-86 so that the animal can digest, sleep, prevent moisture loss (big problem with hatchlings), and develop an immune system.
As far as eating, albigs are big time eaters, as a 2 month old hatchling they can almost eat adult mice every day with proper basking (surface temps).
Get a necropsy done, without seeing your animal and its living conditions in person no one could know for sure.
