The REAL lenght records

Well, while we wait for someone to go get a true measurment of the big Indonesian python, there's no point in saying this or that anymore because it all comes down to mere speculation.
And, though we don't know for sure if this is a record breaker yet, here i leave a reminder of what lenghts the snake must surpass in order to be called such:

longest snake kept in captivity - retic (Collossus) 28' 6''

longest snake ever found alive - retic (in 1912) 32' 9.5''

longest snake ever known to exist - a Giganthopis gastini specimen found in Egipt (quite dead, of couse) at 36'

The 49' lenght would claim ALL this records, but i don't think it's even close. As i said, we have to wait...

Is that the longest snake ever kept in captivity or the longest snake currently in captivity? I thought that Bob Clark's retic Fluffy was the biggest in the world right now. I have been wrong before though...

I beleive the largest sanke in captivity is Baby .. a burm at 27 feet .. 411 ponds .. or something like that ..

That is if the retic is a hoaks.. I may be wrong as well

As far as what I have read, Collossus was the biggest snake ever kept in Captivity. It is no longer living.

Think about the largest fossoral snake - biggest one ever found was 36'. You'd think statistics would dictate that nothing will ever be found currently living, as large as that snake.

Of course, statistics suck - but it is food for thought.

I heard that Baby was dead. I believe she was the world's heaviest snake. The record should have been the world's most over weight snake.

Is the largest species ever found in anyway related to modern pythons? Does it have any living relatives? It would be interesting to trace the natural history and evolution of snakes.

Yep, Kevin. It is said they were very similar to Python Sebae. If they ever crossed, part of it's genes still exist within rock python's blood. That would make one or another afrock to exhibit traits of Giganthopis at some point in generations. Scary, huh?

And now another subject:

Prehistoric snake and the longest know snake species ever, and from what I have just learned in this thread it is similar to the African Rock Python (Python sebae sebae).

I think Bob Clark's Fluffy is 24'. He came to one of our herp club meetings last year with some of his retics and BPs. He said next time he comes he would bring Fluffy.
