what im planning to do for my tank is to have the glass inside wood trim. Router out the wood and embed the glass in it, put hinges on the trim.

I made a tank with sliding doors..i used tracks with plexi glass. Make sure the tracks are perfectly sized for your glass..mine were a little tight and it makes it hard to slide.
Here's a pic.

theres a set of those on the top and bottem and are held in place with carpenters glue.

I use sliding track.
Bartman: If you want to fix your track take a thin piece of wood(wrap in sandpaper) and sand down the inside of the track. Make sure wood is smaller then the gap in the track :). I had to do this on a bunch of cages before I went to 1/4" track. It works very well but take a liitle time but is well worth the effort.

I was about to post basically the same question! It's a long story, but basically, I just finished building a cage except for the doors. I found out that I didn't need the new cage suddenly, but I can use it to expand the enclosures of my other herps. What is the cheapest way to go? I will probably be using it for leos, so it doesn't need to be too secure, but I wanted it to look nice too. Do you have to get the tracks at a glass shop? I couldn't find anything at a hardware store. The opening is about 4' x 2'. How much do you think I could build the door for?

We used to use glass. but because i'm clumsy we are switching to plexi

If I can find a decent plexi supplier in Calgary, that's what I will be switching to as well.

Home Depot, Lansing, Building Box, Rona...they sell acrylic(plexi), thats where I generally buy it... I use it for incubators, where an accidental breakage could be disasterous, but I prefer glass on cages... Plexi scratches very easily, and it looks like hell in no time.
I also use the plastic glass track, and simply
use contact cement to fasten it to the opening.

Anyone ever hear of a snake breaking the glass on any enclosures? I haven't ever heard of this happening but I know that I've seen many snakes behind glass that they are quite capable of breaking through by simply pushing on it. I do know of a retic that popped the padlocked wooden door off it's hinges so it doesn't seem to me an impossible scenario.

Our burm broke the glass on one cage. fortunetly i was in the next room when i heard the crash.

That's a little scary to think about. An escape plus a bunch of broken glass around, what a nightmare!

If they're tough to slide then grease those babies up!

my big Bci decided to "kill" her f/t rabbit by pushing it against the front of the enclosure. 3/8 plexi now has a nice crack, had it been glass...*shudder*

fortunetely she went up instead of down. knocked everything off the top of her cage, broke a bowl i use for feeding too (glass bowl, easy to clean and less porous then plastic). It was a pain too cause I had to rubbermaid her (she could easily get out of that if she wanted) until i could replace the glass.

We have one snake that can open the glass on the front. that's when we started putting locks on the thing. I thought i was going crazy or katey was opening the doors after i knew i closed them when i walked by and i saw the snake slithering about.
Previous owner didn't warn us about that.
