well today was the best ever, after i opened my presents and such i was told there was a present in the room that was hidden. after about an hour of searching i found it.......a hognose!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH im soooooo wxcied its my dream snake, i fhave wanted one since the day i saw one. only thing is the snake was actually a print out, a coupon. but HEY i get a hognose in about two weeks. WOO.

heres how i was thinking about doing the setup tell me waht you think.

i want to use care fresh, about two-three inches b/c they are burrowers.

and for hides dig a small crater and cover it with a piece of slate, so the hide is actually underground.

for heating i want to use lights b/c the hotside needs about 85-90

any suggestions would be awesome, expect pics soon!

WOOOOOOOOOO

Congrats..my friend just got a hognose and he keeps his on that stuff that looks like sand but each grain is a little bigger..brown color..cant remember of the name right now but its good and easy for them to dig through. He also did the same thing you did with the slate. It will give them a more natural hide. Be sure to do that on both ends of the tank..even three hides would be the best..the more the marrier imo :)

i did some reading, and the guy at hognose.com (go figure) said the care fresh is dehydrating and that jungle mix is his favorite. im hoping to get my setup setup in the next week so i can work all the bugs out before i get the snake, im not making that mistake again.

i was talking with my parents, and they said that well prob. pick one out in the mid. of january....i have to clean my room first! LOL

i definitley want a red, i just dont know if i want a male or a female, ill prob. get a fem.

thanx yall

Congrats on the new addition! Lucky to have someone that buys you herps for xmas! :D

I am not very experienced with hognoses so I won't comment on the specifics, but I do know that Carefresh is far from a dehydrating substrate. It is suitable for everything from desert setups to humid environments. I currently just use them for brumating rosy boas and for the pet rodents, but I have used it in the past with much success for housing Brazilian Rainbow boas. BRB are very sensitive to drying out and require 80% humidity. They are swamp snakes that can thrive in even the wettest conditions.

I'm unfamiliar with Jungle Mix so I cannot comment on that. I would just be certain that it doesn't contain any fir bark before you use it, since all softwoods contain phenols which may be harmful over time.

Substrate?

I use Beta chip for my hognose, It's made by Nepco. I would link the site with information on the substrate but it's down, you might wat to look it up.

I've never heard of Jungle Mix.

Hides?

I use different sized plant pot saucers for hides.

I don't really understand how you are making your hides but I reccomend providing different sized hide spots. Also, I don't think you should make them all "underground" because although hognose snakes are burrowers they dont spend ALL there time underground. My hognose actually spends majority of its time ONTOP of the substrate.

Male or Female?

Remember that females get larger than males. I guess it all comes down to what YOU want.

Good luck with your hognose, they're awesome animals!

I've been using good-quality aspen bedding for my little guy. He does not really seem to burrow very much. As Sean observes with his, mine spends most of his time above ground-level. As a matter of fact, my Hoggy is easily the most active snake I've ever owned.
Good luck with yours.

Cheers!

Yup, my hognose is definately my most active snake, always cruising around the enclosure.
