Can somone help me with my savanah monitor? Hes about 6 inches long and he is currently in a quaraqnteen tank of 10 gallons, with news paper substrate, with a large water bowl, i feen himi un dusted crickets, his heat sorce in a heat lamp.

His color is very dark all of the time, when i pick him up sometimes he seems to be stiff, and his eyes will not open for like 2 minutes when im holding him. I have not seen him eat latley.

What can i do to help him? :(

You may want to get a UV light on the little guy. Lizards unlike snakes need a steady source of UV light as part of their care. 12 hours on 12 off. Make sure the temps are correct too because if its too cold they tend not to be too active at all.

Get it to a vet -- end of story. 10:1 he is parasitized. Get a faecal and maybe even bloodwork done.

first off, the future sounds bad for your lizard.

I would put him in some warm water for an hour to hydrate him. Secondly get a bask spot setup. Try and reach 120degrees, and let him bask. Uv isn't nessecary. Let us know how it goes.

You may need to have him wormed as mentioned above.. Its not a thing a beginner should be doing, but you may have no other choice. Still try and contact some vets even if its long distance, some will offer their advice to you.

I can maybe find some medical help for your monitor.
It definately sounds like it needs a DVM.

Ive him some heat, leave him alone and take the fecal = poo poo to a vet, any dog/cat vet can tell if there are parasites in feces - and they can call other vets to properly identify if need-be...

hmm could this be related to him being housed with a nile monitor? You deffinately want to quarrentine that one too and get it to a vet if possible seeing as they were living together.

I know what you could do...Sell the monitor to a more responsible keeper. One that educates him/herself PRIOR to aquiring the lizard. And maybe even one that MAKES SURE there is a good herp vet in the area, again PRIOR to getting the lizard.

next time, please, buy a book before you purchase a monitor, or at the VERY least do some internet research. I know this post sounds condesending but it's not fair for monitors to be kept by irresponsible keepers.

SH - Our Iguana Mikko was examined after responses on your site concurred with my opinion that she may be suffering MBD. Looking on your vet referral info, I found Metroplex, where we had taken our sick dog for emergency treatment. Very good, very nice folks. Anyway, They were very thorough, determined that she was a he, weighing 4 pounds 6 ozs. 4 feet and 7inches long. Xrays showed him to be in fine bone health. Ms. Kiernicki was great with Mikko, very patient, and not at all upset when he gave her an impromptu poop sample--which she said was good looking and indicative of a health lizard. I would highly recommend her as a vet. PS: when we arrived around 7pm for our appointment, she was in with a little netherland rabbit having trouble delivering babies (which we have gone through also!) If you have varied pets like we do, and they get into this or that from time to time, I highly recommend Metroplex in general, and Ms. Kiernicki specifically. (07/13/02)

A proper cage setup,ie; basking spot thats 120+ (I use higher)(surface temp by the way, use an infared thermometer), a cool end that goes down to 75 degrees or so (air temp), clean drinking water, sounds like hes cold and dehydrated, he needs to see a vet (check the ARAV website), he needs to be able to go from hot to cool when he needs it so a good temp gradient (that means enough space for him at the temps he wants or needs), a substrate that hols moisture and a burrow ideally (I use dirt). If hes dark hes trying to warm up probably and cant. Dont use a screen lid or block the screen with a piece of plexiglass with some vent holes in it, or you will have a dehydrated piece of monitor jerky.

At least one of the 50+ vets on here must be near you and be able to preform common fecals and other simple exams even on reptiles.

I do not know if he NEEDS a vet or not, but I am saying you have no excuse if he does. There ARE vets near you. Period. Good luck with him. I'd also like to point out that with your "reptile show" ideas, and your list of animals you want, not having a vet is 100% out of the question. In fact, I wouldn't get another animal until you have a vet.
